Over Thanksgiving break, AT&T offered every movie channel for free. So I went on a recording spree of anything I hadn't seen (or possibly heard of) before. For Greater Glory is one of those movies that I hadn't heard of that turns out to be pretty good. I finally got around to watching it over the past day or so. The biggest names from the movie I can think of are Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Peter O'Toole, and Rubn Blades.

It's about the Mexican civil war between the government and religious citizens in 1926. And I'm not talking about a "rhetorical" war. I'm talking about executing priests and hanging people from telephone poles as far as the eye can see type war. I consider myself historically informed, but I had never heard anything about this at all. I had to look up stuff on my phone during the movie because it seemed too cliche to be real. Sure enough, the stuff I looked up pretty much happened like the movie portrayed.

It has a Rotten Tomato critic score of 20% and a audience score of 77%. I tend to like anything good that pisses off critics, since they are typically morons worthy of mocking. If you are into historical drama, then I think this is worth your time.

Thanks for the heads up and agree with your opinion on movie critics. Look forward to watching.

looks like it was partially funded by the knights of columbus, so keep that in mind when watching.

Why is this worth keeping in mind when watching?

Do you say "Schindler's list was partially funded by Jews, so keep that in mind when watching"?

"Jews" aren't an organized group with active policy positions against same sex marriage, birth control and abortion.

Lot's of Jews, especially those making movies, are liberal which is far worse. Of the two, I'd prefer to support the side against infanticide.

But it doesn't matter, this movie didn't say anything about same sex marriage, birth control, or abortion.

What a vile, caustic, and bigoted take.

Have you actually seen the movie and were those themes/beliefs that you pointed out propagandized in the film?

It stars Eva Longoria, who is about as outspoken of a liberal as you can be, with emphasis on women and latino rights. Do you think she would be a part of a movie that would present a narrative counter to those sacred cows of liberals?

She hosted the first night of this past year's Democratic National Convention. So yeah, I don't think she would have been a part of such a film.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2020/10/20/eva-longoria-interview-politics/

I guess it's to be expected that people would have the viewpoint of cautioning, denigrating, or straight up denying people of differing beliefs to present such art (film) that may differ from theirs or not be deemed acceptable by some arbitrary standard. Hollywood has a history of that.....https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/how-hollywood-helped-hitler-595684

"In devastating detail, an excerpt from a controversial new book reveals how the big studios, desperate to protect German business, let Nazis censor scripts, remove credits from Jews, get movies stopped and even force one MGM executive to divorce his Jewish wife"

"When they objected to scenes or dialogue they thought made Germany look bad, criticized the Nazis or dwelled on the mistreatment of Jews, the studios would accommodate them -- and make cuts in the American versions as well as those shown elsewhere in the world.

"It was not only scenes: Nazi pressure managed to kill whole projects critical of the rise of Adolf Hitler."

What a poisonous take in the discussion of a movie.

Oh the horror! As far as I remember none of these topics are covered in the film.

It's a low budget but well done historical film with a great cast, based on an overlooked chapter in Mexican history.

Ignore the bigots showing themselves in this thread, except to remember who they are once they've identified themselves.
