The star wars thread started this discussion and i realized that i had not seen very many series that people really thought were great, epic, etc.

I then did a search for this forum and i didnt pull up a thread on this, so i think it is time.


Epic Category - I have the following:

Breaking Bad
band of brothers
chernobyl


Great -

GOT (i never thought i'd like it but it got great in the middle and later seasons, and then SO CLOSE at the end but they ****ed it up totally, preventing the epic score).

Westworld, (s3 had some troubles, but S1 was so good and s2 good enough to keep it here)

The Americans (had a few diversions, but overall great and the great ending seems hard to pull off so it deserves it)

lost (the first big one i knew of. it wandered in the middle big time and lost some cohesion, but i didnt hate the ending nearly as much as many)

GoT doesn't deserve to be on any "great" lists. There were great episodes, even great seasons but when looked at holistically, it flat out sucked.

It suffers from being on FX. It's like 80 episodes (IIRC, there was a 19 episode season) and about 25 of them are filler. Some of the plots are just terrible. New stunt bosses each season. No budget for actors so you end up with 1-2 members of the strike team being nobodies who never acted again, and Chiklis unable to act real life daughter playing his kid on the show.
But it was groundbreaking and stuff like the wire or the Americans might not have happened without tiny little Chiklis killing cops and pissing off armenians.

Season 2 of Fargo is my standard for greatness. Just ticks all the boxes, the characters and plot were awesome. Number 1 IMO.

The Wire, has grown on me after watching it multiple times due to the human condition it portrays. Number 2.

Breaking Bad had some many OMG moments, and until recently was my Number 2. Now Number 3.

The Expanse is Number 4 - best sci-fi show ever made. Way better than BSG or any other sci-fi show made. Number 4.

know its before a lot of your times but you guys HAVE TO watch NYPD Blue. Seasons 1-7 or so at least. (After 7 wasn't as good, but still decent).

As someone who has now watched 4 decades of TV I'd easily put it in my top 5 all time.


1: Breaking Bad (this is supreme above everything else, GoT had a chance to knock it off and so badly screwed it up)

2: NYPD Blue (Smits years especially)

3: The Office

4: Frasier (yes, I loved Cheers, but I'd put Frasier above it)

5: Sopranos

6: Better Call Saul

7: Game of Thrones

8: Peaky Blinders

9: Narcos

10: The Wire (I like the Wire, but I also think its a bit overrated )

Game of Thrones is like an Olympic gymnast who is crushing the competition and only needs to land their final vault to ensure victory, but instead, misses the vault entirely and face plants right into the side of the pommel horse and had to be taken to the ER.
