I will admit, the trailer for the movie got me interested. What really got me interested was the director quotes going on and on about how this book was basically the bedrock of science fiction and yet it isn't very popular in pop culture or movies. The book has very heavy Islamic tones to it, so I can see it not fitting the American cultural palate as well as a de-islamified take on its storyline - Star Wars.

It is most definitely a great book. I'm not done but I would highly recommend it. The best parts about it are how the author chooses to share foreboding plans upfront and so it hooks you quickly and keeps up a fast pace. Another thing I like is that, no one is dumb in this book. Everyone is sharp, has strong motives, and all plot events are full of twists and turns as factions out flank each other, mentally and physically.

Just sharing. There's a poster on here named Duncan Idaho, maybe this will be a bat signal for them.

Is it worth reading the sequels? I wasn't sure if i wanted to read them b/c Dune feels like a pretty complete story.

Its been decades since I've read them, but the sequels written by Frank Herbert never lived up the the promise of the first book. They just weren't as good in my opinion.

There are also several more recent sequels written by Frank's son and another author. They aren't as good either, but clearly have a different writing style.

Just my 2 cents. I'm sure others will have differing opinions.

I enjoyed them.

Messiah and children are a pretty seem less transition. God emperor, heritics and chapterhouse are set thousands of years into the future.

The books by his kid are terrible and ruin everything that makes dune great.

I enjoyed Dune Messiah and Children of Dune and thought they were worth reading. God Emperor of Dune was so far off the rails that I didn't make it all the way through it and haven't read the ones that follow either.

Never read any of the Kevin J. Anderson Dune books. His Star Wars books were trash so I didn't trust him enough with Dune to read them.

I always recommend people to read the first 4 at least. The fully explain The Golden Path that Paul was so scared of. God Emperor is really good, but pretty weird without much action. The other two original books can be read if you want to be complete, but they tell a pretty different story farther in the future.

Dune Messiah was terrific - the way it flipped the narrative on its head was not at all what I expected and I love it for that. Children of Dune I remember as being more complicated and less memorable for some reason. God Emperor of Dune was weird as hell, felt kinda ****ty as a book but like it'd be a tremendous movie (like I said, weird).

Dune is one of my favorite books. Rereading Messiah right now.

The background of how he thought of plot is great. And nobody would publish it for years, similar to Harry Potter. I think Chilton Auto was the publisher that finally signed him.

Finished Dune last week and started Dune Messiah this week. Overall I really liked it am interested to see what happens in Dune Messiah.

I never see Ringworld mentioned when people talk about great science fiction. I read it in junior high and it's one of my favorite books of all time. I still have my copy of it and Ringworld Engineers. I always wanted to see a movie made of Ringworld. Oh well.

Niven's Known Universe is an amazing expanse.

Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle formed a team greater than the sum of its parts and IMHO the best tandem ever.

I thought Ringwolrd kinda... sucked. It started off fun, but maybe I just stopped giving it proper attention while reading but felt like it kind of went nowhere. Or do I need to read the sequel?
