Missed the 70s by 3 years but I'll put it down as "ahead of its time" solely based on the car wash scene. Cool Hand Luke
One Eyed Reveille

Additional trivia I stumbled across going down YouTube rabbit holes putting together the WWII Movies Tournament (yes I'm still working on it), the Steven McQueen character (Capt Hilts, the Cooler King) was very loosely based upon David M. Jones. Jones participated in the Doolittle Raid on Japan in 1942, bailed out over China and avoided capture with the help of the Chinese people. Later that year he was shot down over North Africa, captured and sent to Stalag Luft III. He led the team the digging team on tunnel "Harry" used in the Great Escape, but did not participate in the actual escape since American officers were moved to another camp before it occurred. After the war he went on to have a distinguished career in the USAF, including work with NASA as commander of the Air Force Eastern Test Range, Cape Kennedy, Fla.. He retired Major General in 1973.
I just went and looked this guy up. They should just make a 10 episode Netflix series on his life.

For my age (born in early 70'), with the introduction of cable television to San Antonio around the end of the 70's THIS was my introduction to Clint Eastwood.

Not the Man with No Name, not Dirty Harry......it was trailer park Clint with an orangutan.

This was my theatrical introduction to Clint, but by the time this had come out, I had spent hours with my dad watching Clint's westerns on late-night TV.

EWWBL got me into some trouble with my mom. I had already seen it with my dad, who lived in Houston; mom and I lived in Lake Jackson, where there were two two-screen theaters at the time. When EWWBL came to town, I told my mom I was going one Sunday afternoon. She was fine with that. Rode my bike across town to see the movie (still one of the funniest movies I've ever seen), but decided that I wanted to stay and watch it again. I neglected to call home to let my mom know, and was she pissed when I came waltzing in 2-something hours later than I was expected.

Can't believe no one caught OP calling The Enforcer Dirty Harry 2. Magnum Force was the second Dirty Harry movie. The Enforcer was number 3.

ETA: Steve McQueen driving the dune buggy in The Thomas Crown Affair is the coolest thing ever.

A few months ago one of the cable channels was showing a lot of Clint Eastwood 70's era films. i caught 'The Eiger Sanction', 'Thunderbolt and Lightfoot', and 'The Gauntlet'. I need to see 'Play Misty for Me' again. It's been forever since I've seen that one.

Another great early (1962) Steve McQueen movie is the World War II film Hell is for Heroes. McQueen plays the new member of the squad, Reese, a veteran combat soldier with a troubled past. He's definitely a true BA in this flick. He carries a M3 "grease gun" and a butcher knife and viciously uses them both.

With Fess Parker, Bobby Darin, Bob Newhart, Harry Guardino and James Coburn. Directed by Don Siegel who went on to direct Dirty Harry, The Shootist and other great movies.

In my opinion one of the best, authentic WW II movies.

After you watch all the Steve McQueen movies, you should watch this 2000's comedy called The Tao of Steve

He comes up several times in the movie as the epitome of masculinity

And yes, the main character is completely horrible.
But funny
Great movie
