My grandfather was a NCO in the Pacific. He and his two brothers enlisted in '42, one of whom had just been called up to the majors for the White Sox at the end of the '41 season. Left it behind to serve his country. Grandfather was wounded and received a Purple Heart during the liberation of the Philippines at Luzon. My uncle has the pistol and sword he took off a Japanese officer. I have his Purple Heart.

All three brothers made it back and two started families right away. One went back to the majors to start a 18-year career, which included a '54 World Series trip and a batting record that still stands today. I was in awe of all three of them, my heroes.
