I am two seasons in. I heard from most people that the first two were slow and to just make it through. Even talked to a few that quit in S1 or S2.

Maybe I am just easily entertained but I loved them both.

so many characters I love.

aside from the obvious ones...I am big fan of DeAngelo(well I was ), Niko, and in a way, Frank(he really wasnt a bad dude). Bubs is cool I would love for him to get clean. his running buddy grosses me the hell out though.

The worst people on this show are the spouses. Every single one of them. Kimas wife makes me ragey. Just a miserable person.

McNulty is one of my favorite characters ever.

anyways...curious of your ranking of the seasons. No spoilers please but thoughts that arent spoilers are fine.

from what I have read I think common believe is:

4
3
2
1
5

that about right? I will share my thoughts when I am done.

Low key jealous. Seasons 3 and 4 were my favorite. Wish I could back and watch both of them for the first time. They are all-time great television seasons.

4 being the best, 5 being the worst is pretty much the consensus. The three in the middle I suspect would vary pretty wildly - I like them all pretty evenly it is tough to rank. I think I'd go 4, 2, 3, 1, 5.

Season 4 is the greatest single season of any tv show in history IMO. Season 5 is the worst of the show, but still better than most tv. I think people dump on it so hard because it's just good and not great. It does have an absurd storyline, but it doesn't ruin the season. Seasons 1,2 and 3 can be put in any order depending on my mood at the time.

I'm almost done with my first time watching it - S5E3. It has more than lived up to the hype.

Won't say too much as I don't want to spoil anything at all, but I would rank mine like this so far:

4
3
2
1
5

The episode I watched last night (S5E3) was the first episode that I thought was kind of bad, which is incredible 50+ episodes into a series.

So many great characters, such a good show.

I have frequently gone to check out how a series rates via IMDB.

Here is the Wire:

Season 2 seems to rank at the bottom.

I'm at the end of Season 4, and I always thought 'The Greek' would pop-up at some point after Season 2

Maybe its still to come, but Season 2 ending was kind of meh

When I finish my Sopranos rewatch (on S4 ep 7) IO'm gonna do The Wire again.

Been a while.

I always had a little different view I guess. I watched it as it aired so I think some time between seasons made it have a different impact. I loved S1.... was a little put off by S2 course change but liked it more in the end. By S3 I was like ok i know each season will be a curveball but the political aspects still turned me off. S4 blew me away and S5 although you could say it was a little letdown was a great wrap to a series anyway.

To me it is all really great - just a matter of which is the most great. I would rank them

4
1
2
3
5

like most say though 4 is the best, 5 the worst and the others 123 in any order. Many rank 4 then 3 so you have yet to see probably the consensus 2 best seasons. So if you are loving it - that's a good sign.

He was also in Friday Night Lights, which he was great in.

Two high quality shows. As a young actor, was he just lucky to get cast in both? Or was it because he's talented? I've just been thinking about actors and how they succeed. You've got to have an eye for quality material, but at the same time, you can't be choosy if you're an unknown. Lot of luck involved I guess.

My guess is half of it is luck, the other is talent and agency combined. I really thought the kid who played Michael was going to be the biggest star after the show behind Idris. In terms of acting, I thought the guy who played Bodie did the best job. Michael B. Jordan, and don't get me wrong because he was GREAT as Wallace, was somewhere in between those guys on my career projection chart.

Season 2 is seriously underrated and one of my favorites.

The Sobatkas are fantastic.

Plus it earns extra points for the bare rack of Frank's GF.

And The Sopranos. Small part in a flashback in S1 as a kid in Newark harassing a young Tony.

That was his first role followed by a one episode role on The Cosbys.

This won't be a spoiler since the new viewer here has seen S1 and S2....

They made some "shorts" that were little 2 minute prequels. The first was young Prop Joe, the second is a young Omar on the streets, and the third is when Bunk met McNulty - which is awesome!!!!

All are on this link

Opinions on 2 differ more than most seasons. Other than maybe 4, it was my favorite. I go 4,2,1,3,5.

I hated 2 the first time I saw it, but it has grown on me. I think I initially hated it because it was so different than 1. It seemed like it was basically starting a new story over. But then as the followup seasons happened, you can see how they all fit together. Except 5. They should have never made that one.

I'm on my 4th rewatch and am currently early in season 5.

My first time through I didn't like the political story lines either. This time through I've loved them. I'm not sure if it's because I'm older, or maybe I'm picking up on political aspects (in-fighting) that I didn't grasp early on...but the wielding of power, in those offices, how it's used, how the trickle down plays out... I've REALLY grown to appreciate those story lines during my rewatches. The jockeying for power, using the budgets to do so, pride, future plans, who/where to cut/fund...in many ways that now seems like the most realistic aspects of the show.

As a poster above said: if you've already enjoyed seasons 1 and 2 you're going to love 3 and 4. Season 5 was a weird curveball. I think the writer's strike during the 2000's delayed it (or Chase had to fight for it to be made...can't remember the back story on it) but it feels weird and forced compared to the others even if it's good TV. I actually didn't mind the other aspect of the city (paper) that it began to include but some of the other stuff was odd.

Oh...and on this rewatch I think I settled into the last two episodes of S4 as my favorites from the entire thing.

Whew...Stringer just told Avon he killed Dee. That was intense.

Almost just as emphatic of a scene though was right before that when Mcnulty told Dee's mom it was all her fault. That was emotional.

Started a rewatch because of this thread. It's been 8+ years since my last run through of the series - long enough for a lot of the details to seem fresh again. I'm about 1/2 way through season 2.

This show has so many great characters. I think probably Lester Freamon and Bubbles are two of my favs.

Barstool movies asked what was the best season of any show and TD S1 was the overwhelming answer.

Wire 4
BB 5
Office 2 and 3
Fargo S2

were other notable ones mentioned more than a few times.

Regarding S2 of the wire, it was just such a refresh from the first season that it felt a bit weird at the time of release. Who cares about the docks?

It melded in perfect with the rest of the series upon repeat viewings.
