How did it take so long to finally view the show?

Not only has it been available for many years....it's been acclaimed for many years.

Best character:
St. Gus the Newspaper God

rewatching now for the 4th or 5th time and i still binge it like i've never seen it before.

just finished season 2...made me remember how irritating ziggy and major valchek were.

this series also makes you realize how ridiculous the war on drugs was/is. the amount of resources going after corners was crazy.

Sopranos AND Wire?

I could understand first diving in 10 years ago .... but this is a massive amount of time passed since the final episodes, and the shows have been widely available and critically praised for even longer than that.

Season 4 is the greatest single season of any tv show in history IMO. Season 5 is the worst of the show, but still better than most tv. I think people dump on it so hard because it's just good and not great. It does have an absurd storyline, but it doesn't ruin the season. Seasons 1,2 and 3 can be put in any order depending on my mood at the time.
Season 1 True Detective and Season 2 Fargo would like a word here...

Barstool movies asked what was the best season of any show and TD S1 was the overwhelming answer.

Wire 4
BB 5
Office 2 and 3
Fargo S2

were other notable ones mentioned more than a few times.

Regarding S2 of the wire, it was just such a refresh from the first season that it felt a bit weird at the time of release. Who cares about the docks?

It melded in perfect with the rest of the series upon repeat viewings.

Definitely need a playoff bracket for best season of TV

*NO MINISERIES so BOB does not win
and
*since 2000 (Tv landscape is so different now post Sopranos)

The Wire S3 S4
Fargo S2
Breaking Bad S4 S5 S6
Lost S1
Americans S3 S4 S6
GOT S4 S5 S6
BCS S5
Westworld S1
The Crown S1 S2
Mad Men S2 S4
Deadwood S2
True Detective S1
Homeland S1
Halt and Catch Fire S3 S4
Justified S2 S3 S4 S5
Firefly S1
Freaks and Geeks S1
Downton Abbey S1
Orange is the New Black S1
House of Cards S1
Narcos S1 S2 S3
Silicon Valley S1
Man in the High Castle S1

gonna be a deep field.

? would you maybe playoff each show to just 1 season each for the tourney, or let shows have multiple seasons?

This show has insane staying power and relevance. I've had a lot of people tell me it's too slow, but damn it's worth it.

So I finished season 3 last night.

I am honestly not sure which I liked better out of 2 and 3. And that's no knock on season 3 I just really liked season 2 as well.

Stringer getting shot was one of the more powerful scenes I have ever seen. He just carried so much power the whole show that even when they had him at gunpoint I felt like he would find a way out of it. Seeing him run for his life just felt humbling. no way he can get shot...WRONG.

I love Dennis and his whole purpose in the show. I was so glad he got back out of the game.

Now...watching this show is so much different after reading for years that season 4 is the best season. Because if I didnt know that, or if I had watched it live, I would have much different expectations going into season 4 with Stringer dead and Avon locked up. Very excited to see where this goes.

Question-do yall think Colvin really got the reduction in pay for his pension? that broke my heart. Surely they couldnt get away with that.

Random thoughts heading into season 4(dont answer these!):

-saw Rawls in that gay bar...does anything come from that?

-Does the Kima/baby situation get more run as a storyline?(this bothers me by the way because I liked her a lot and hate her wife but it still bothers me)

-Omar has to be a big part of season 4. Marlo too. Why was he at Avons trial? just to piss him off...or another reason? hmmmm

-Will Bubs finally clean up or have something terrible happen to him? 1 of them happening seems inevitable

--I assume the Carcetti mayoral race will be a large part of Season 4. I hope that storyline intrigues me more next season because honestly its the least interested I have been in a storyline this whole show. didnt care much about it but I dont think I had a reason to until the last episode.

Finished the series last night. Man, what a show. Such a beautiful, heartbreaking, and occasionally uplifting look at a city. Some well earned endings, both happy and depressing for some of my favorite characters. Plenty of endings that show that the game is the game and the cycle is just going to keep on repeating itself.

Wish I had another season to watch!

Saw an interesting comment yesterday that said Bubbles and Daniels were never in a scene together. Without me going back and rewatching it, it seems like they were in the basement (at least in passing) during season 1 when Bubbles was down there talking to Keama, Mcnulty, and/or Sidnor.

Maybe Daniels wasn't down there during any of those bits...but man that's hard to believe over 5 seasons.

This thread prompted a re-watch, which is great because I only watched once the first time through.

I'm about 1/2 through Season 2. It is generally considered the second weakest (5) but I remember liking it and love even more this time through. I'm a labor lawyer, so the union stuff is fantastic. Frank Sobotka is one of the best characters in the whole series, a true tragic hero. Frank's loyalty to the union above all else is probably only topped by Bodie's to the game.

just finished it...I actually liked season 5 a lot.

I did NOT see duquan becoming a junkie to end this. WTF. All part of the game I guess. but damn.

Best characters of any show of all time.

Still wont rank it over GOT but that has a lot to do with the era of the show and technology. Writing too though.

havent seen BB in 10 years and hardly remember a thing. Going to rewatch so I can properly rank the 3.

When Bubs tried to hang himself at the end of S4, I originally thought that they should have let him go through with it and it would have been a fitting end for him. After watching S5, I'm happy that they didn't and had a redemption arc for him. Was very rewarding to watch after 5 seasons of struggle. Of course they had to show the game is the game and the cycle repeating itself with Duquan.

one thing that bothered me about the Bubs ending is him and Kima's relationship was such a big part of the show early on but it didnt show her seeing him sober even once. that was a miss there.

This. Sobotka and Bodie were the two Willy Loman characters in the Wire. They were tremendous.

I can't recall their last interaction and if it was good or bad, but it didn't bother me that she wasn't around him in S5. She cared for him, but she didn't need him for police work and she was tied up in the serial killer case while he was off working on staying clean. If it was a different show, of course she would have magically showed up at the AA meeting when he got his chip; but it's The Wire, and things don't work that way on this show.

meh...the classic "Its the wire thats how it goes" isnt the best reasoning for this. It gave her the feel good moment with the baby in S5. The bubs deal would have been better. At least they had a strong character relationship throughout the heart of the show.

You might not like it (which is fine!), but it is the best reason for it because that's not how the writers work. I've been reading All The Pieces Matter, the oral history of the show, and it seems clear to me why they didn't have them reconnect.

They ended it with each of the main kids that season going one of the four different directions:
Randy ending up getting mean and tough in the group home. When he gets out he's definitely going to be working a corner or muscle for a crew.

Dookie is a user. He's homeless and becoming a fiend.

Michael obviously slides into an Omar role. A little artificial feeling but it worked.

Namond being raised by a cop and ending up not in the game (at least not on the street side). Cop? Politician (shown winning a debate)? Attorney? Something in that realm.

Dookie was trending that way from the opening episode of that season. Terrible home life, ostracized at school and on the corner, not tough, always looking for a different reality. The shock at the end of that season would have been if he DIDNT end up a junkie.

Ha..maybe. Or Carcetti? "You know the mayor Mr. C? Man......."

It boils down to him ending up on the "good guys" side. Four kids with four very different outcomes and directions, all pretty well decided by the end of 9th grade.
