My Grandpa had a band where he played fiddle and was lead singer for probably 45 years. He never learned how to read music and learned everything by ear. He would record songs off the radio with his little cassette player and listen to them over and over to learn them. God I miss that man.
He was really impressed by the intro and fiddle in Garth Brook's Wild Horses and finally taught himself to play it. He never played it at a gig because overall he didn't like Garth even back then. He just wanted to learn how to play it because he liked it. Every time I hear that song or the orange blossom special I think of him.
On second thought, Orange Blossom Special: Here is Merle playing it with his fiddle player. The whole damn song is a fiddle solo.
