I think his portrayal of Jack Ryan is the best of anyone to play the role

George Clooney was a better Bruce Wayne than Michael Keaton.

Agree. His version was pretty close to the Ryan in the book. I didn't get too big into Clancy books, so I don't know if his characterization in the novels changed to Last Action Hero, but the screen portrayals definitely changed him over time.

Baldwin comes the closest to the character portrayed in the novel, but the scene when Ryan, Mancuso et al are getting ready to board the Red October and tries to decline a hand gun never rang true for me. Would a US Marine display such an anti-gun mentality? Especially when going into a potentially hostile environment?

He's he biggest dooosh on the planet...and I saw this movie before I hated his ass.

I still remember him defending his mom's million flat his charity bought for her because she ran it and needed a place to stay when she was running it.

Maybe he just truly understood that " some things in here don't react too well to bullets."

I have had heated arguments with friends in the past that swore Harrison Ford was THE Jack Ryan standard. I just don't see it.

Absolutely. Because at that point he was thinking as a CIA analyst that needed to win Ramius' trust and confidence. Mancuso and his sidearm could be the muscle. Ryan knew he needed to be the diplomat.

The only way I enjoy that show is to think of it as not connected to the Tom Clancy universe at all.

I think that Alec was the best as a young Jack Ryan, Harrison Ford did a pretty good job representing an older Jack Ryan as he climbed the ranks in the CIA, and would have been a good choice to continue the novels and eventually become President. (Although you could imagine that Ford in Air Force One was Jack Ryan)

Yikes. Red October is better than all of Ford's Jack Ryan movies. Could watch it over and over again.

But Best movie <> Best portrayal

Clear and Present Danger had a lesser screenplay/plot than Red October and the latter got Sean Connery in support while the former had Willem Dafoe, for example.

Not picking a side, I thought they both did well with their role, given what they were, respectively.

And, as someone mentioned above I also kept subconsciously slipping into thinking of Ford as "Jack Ryan" on a recent rewatch of AF One.

Been a long time since I've watched the whole movie (even though it's on tv all the time including a marathon yesterday). But was he really "anti-gun?" I remember that as just emphasizing how uncomfortable he was with going into action, as he discussed w/ the director earlier on. He was a desk guy who normally wore a suit. He didn't even wear the right uniform when he deployed.
