I think his portrayal of Jack Ryan is the best of anyone to play the role
I don't think this is a controversial opinion at all.
I have had heated arguments with friends in the past that swore Harrison Ford was THE Jack Ryan standard. I just don't see it.
Yikes. Red October is better than both of Ford's Jack Ryan movies. Could watch it over and over again.
FIFY.

Yeah, I get that.

My impression at the time I first saw this movie (opening day in March 1990, big fan of the book), was that I didn't believe he'd be uncomfortable with the gun. I used the term "anti-gun" to put it in today's terminology, not even sure that was a term when the movie was released.

And yeah, I believe the uniform he wore was a Navy uni, certainly was not a Marine uni. But while he morphed into a CIA analyst, in his earlier life he was a United States Marine who would have been comfortable with guns as a result of his bootcamp days and any action he may have seen. Jack Ryan from the novels was certainly okay with them (see Patriot Games, the book not necessarily the meh movie). And someone else mentioned being diplomatic. Yeah, I get that too, but damn, at the time the movie was made, the Berlin Wall still stood, the USSR was still the big baddie, and these Americans are getting ready to step into a Soviet submarine. While Ryan was ultimately proven correct, they could not have know with absolute certainty that their time aboard the Red October would not be undiplomatic (ie, the cook featured in the movie).

Still, I do agree with the OP's contention that Alec Baldwin was the best Jack Ryan. And I know folks abhor Pearl Harbor, but while I enjoy big parts of that movie, it still ticks me off that this clown Baldwin was cast to portray one of my top childhood heroes, Jimmy Doolittle.

Should we ask the cook if Ryan is anti-gun?

An older sibling had given me a couple Clancy books. Hunt For Red October was the only one I got all the way through. Was excited enough about the movie that I pumped everyone up to go see it as a group outing with some middle school classmates. Have a Summer birthday, so I had to use persuasiveness when I wanted to do school year group outings like that.

Hunt for Red October is probably my favorite book of all time and the movie is in my top 5. Its weird though. When I read the Jack Ryan books, I picture Baldwin for Red October but Ford for all the others. Not Clear and Present Danger or Patriot Games Ford, but Air Force One Ford.

Harrison Ford only has two Jack Ryan movies and you said all of them.

I said all of Ford's Jack Ryan movies.

Or are you being pedantic about using all to describe a group of two?
