If you like war movies, Greyhound is a 90 minute ride that leaves you feeling as exhausted as Hanks looks by the end of the movie.

Greyhound is set in the Battle of the Atlantic in WW2. Fleets crossed east from the US bringing needed men & supplies. German U-boats lay in wait for them like lions in the Masai Mara marking the wildebeest great migration. Hanks captains a destroyer protecting a fleet.

A German wolf pack of multiple subs hunts them.

The movie gives a close up look at the function of a destroyer crew under combat, and to me, the entire thing was riveting. The burden of leadership is also front & center. Do you rescue sailors in the water? Or do you speed to help another convoy ship in distress? There's 15 seconds to make the decision, and it's yours alone, captain.

I'd like to see a movie about the guys like my grandfather who was too old to sign up for the service. He ended up signing up for the merchant marines and got assigned as a gunner on his boat.

My grandfather was not too old during the war, but he ended up in the Naval Armed Guard and was a gunner as well I believe. He did many of these convoys and was in a boat that got hit by the Germans in 1943. Thankfully, there were no casualties and they eventually got rescued. They did send notice to his mom that he had perished and then sent a "jk we found them" notice.

Really fascinating part of the war that I knew nothing about. I was able to find out a lot about him and then these convoys the AG and Merchant Marines did after requesting his records from NARA.

We just got back from Chicago and we went to the Museum of Science and Industry. They have the only captured U-boat in the museum there. Lots of info on the Hunter-Killer Task Force that took the U-boat out and how they boarded it and had 8 minutes to diffuse the bombs and put the locks back in place to keep it from sinking.

They towed it from the coast of Western Africa to Bermuda (2500 miles) without being detected and kept it quiet for a year because they took the Enigma and all of their code books and didn't want the Germans changing up their codes. They kept the POWs in Ruston, La

That is a fine exhibit. I was amazed at the sheer size of that U-Boat, a Type IXC U-Boat. To keep any anti-Americans from chiming in on the bolded, this was the only sub the Americans captured; the Brits captured U-110 in May '41 and U-570 in August '41. Even the Japs captured a U-Boat: U-219 in May '45 after VE Day. And nope, Matthew McConaughey never captured a U-Boat.

I am going to have to see this. My uncle, Edgar Musselwhite served on the USS Reuben James a destroyer that was assigned to guard convoys before the beginning of WW2. On Oct 31 1941 it was sunk by a German sub off the coast of Iceland. The torpedo hit the magazine which exploded and completely blew off the bow of the ship. It sunk within five minutes. Of 144 men aboard only 44 were saved. My uncle was one of those that died. This was the first ship sunk in the war, actually before war was declared.

Yes, The song was written by Woodie Guthrie. He originally wrote verses which named each man who had died , but of course it was much too long so it was replaced with the chorus " What were there names?"

It was a sad story and a huge loss to my mom and my grandparents. They had three sons who served in the Navy, but only lost one. He was 20 when he died. He got married shortly before he shipped out in September of 1941.
