The wife and I are now 4 episodes in and have heard such great things about the show. Does it pick up and get better?

Does the daughter ever get more tolerable? Her constant drunkenness, drinking, and doing random crap like getting naked in a bathtub outside really takes away from some other enjoyable parts.

It's a combination of Dallas, Heartland, and Sopranos, and it works pretty well for the most part.

I watched all three seasons recently for the first time. Thought season 1 was pretty eye-rolling, with some pretty unbelievably contrived situations but kept me interested. Season 2 was much better and more serious. Season 3 was good, but seemed to rehash some of the season 2 plot but with different bad guys. Looking forward to season 4.

And the daughter is the best part. Think of her as a smart, but more troubled, Sue Ellen.

OP, not really. Ridiculous storylines and unlikable characters are very consistent throughout.

She's the best character on the show. Beth is awesome


Her vs the store owner scene is an all time great. She gets to be more of a sympathetic/interesting char as the show goes on.

I actually enjoyed her getting naked in the tub.

But, yeah you either like Beth or hate her. I pretty much love or hate (which is what you're supposed to do with some) all the characters.

Beth - She grows on you (at least for me)
RIP - Favorite character and maybe TV character of all time (buy I'm a sucker for loyalty)
Jamie - Loathe
Kaycee - Initially didn't like him, but he has grown on me.
Lee - Yes
John - Who doesn't like Costner in a western role?
Monica - This is the only character who really annoys me
Really like Jimmy and Walker characters

I'm always on the very edge of giving up on the show, but never quite fall over. There are enough good episodes to balance out the dull ones. A couple of the characters are a beating to spend time with, season 2 is the worst in that regard (if I remember right). It's too close to a soap opera for me, but there are redeeming features, too.

Unfortunately Monica is one of the worst parts of the show. I think the actress is good, but the writing is terrible.

We were just saying while watching an episode last night it seemed like she was reading off cue cards.

Its written with all these little monologues in a way that no one talks, but not in a good Sorkin way.

It has it slow moments, but it also has one of the best scenes in television history IMHO.

When Monica is accused of shoplifting and her SiL comes to save her - well, I'm not gonna ruin it, but I guarantee you'll go back and rewatch it several times.

The scene where he wakes up in the hospital and Costner reads him is injury list is awesome.

He has a really unique sound. He also used to rodeo and still sits around with the cowboys after rodeos and plays music and talks with them until late at night. My aunt works rides and said he's one of the nicest people she has met.
