How did she ever get parts in movies and as a leading lady in some?
HBO Max has The Shining and I have never watched it all the way through before. Think i would always catch it in the middle or at different points.
But I think part of the reason I couldn't watch it all the way through was her (and jack nicholson chewing through scenery playing Jack Nicholson).
What am I missing?

Is this the VORP thread?
Because Sandra Locke IMO has a much much worse VORP than Shelly Duval.
Heather Graham has a bit of that factor as well.

I'm trying to think of a male actor equivalent.

Kubrick drove her insane with his perfection. I think I read somewhere the scene at the stairs took enough takes to run up the Empire State Building, and she was a broken person off the set. She had physical illness and hair loss. Kubrick demanded everyone ignore her on the set so she felt helpless. It was what he wanted for her character. I don't think she ever recovered.

For me, she's always the mom in Suburban Commando!

I was replying just to post this. What a fascinating article and it makes me want to explore some of those older movies she starred in.

Just looking at that picture of her, I could run into her at the Brookshire Bros for years and never put two and two together.

Part of what made Kubrick's Shining such a departure from the book is you couldn't really blame Jack for wanting to get rid of her, she was annoying af.

The book is so so different. It really digs into Jack's psyche and goes into his history of breaking Danny's arm in a drunken rage, his getting fired from his prestigious job when he assaulted a student, his alcoholism, etc. It really makes it a more rich and in depth story. Now I need to read it again. Its one of my favorites.

Yeah. From what I've read Kubrick was downright abusive to her on set. Fantastic director but also pretty ruthless.

I think you are dramatically over-estimating how much an actress was paid to make a movie in 1979/80.

Check her out in Brewster McCloud w/ Bud Cort which was filmed in the Astrodome. I think it was one of her first films.

I thought she had gone super nuts....like straight jacket and padded room nuts and could've sworn I saw an "interview" between her and dr Phil in her house where they were trying to get her some help

But relating it to Duvall - Wendy in the book is likeable. Strong, beautiful woman that you are rooting for (both to save the family unit and then later just to survive).

Wendy in the movie is nails on chalkboard from jump street (or jump mountain road?).

The TV version followed the book much more closely.

Unfortunately outside of the great job Rebecca Demornay did with Wendy, you had Stephen Weber over-acting Jack and a Danny that basically replaced Duvall as wholly unlikable and you were rooting against him surviving.

The tv Danny was annoying, but it's not like the kid in the movie version was that great either. If anything Weber showed Jack's descent much better, as opposed to Nicholson who instantly went crazy.

Exactly and after Wings I could never buy Weber in that role, and his "acting" didn't help matters. Loved him on Wings though. Yeah that kid sucked too...I did like how they were more faithful to the book, which is still one of my favorites and one that really did scare the crap out of me as a kid.

She is a nut living out in Blanco. She gave is permission to lay a survey panel down for a flight. We went out there and let her know we were out there and she went off like a crazy lady. Her hair was long, grey and scary looking. This was in 2002.
