His characters were original and refreshing. Part of us were in every one.

Lonesome Dove is the best book I've ever read and it's not even close. Ok maybe Streets of Laredo was close.

All My Friends are Going to be Strangers was such a hard detour from what Lonesome Dove was I was about half way through it and absolutely hated it. I got to the end and it's one of my favorite books of all time.

What an absolute legend.

I had to stop reading that because my life was a little out of control at the time. Great book!

Man this is a tough one. I wrote him a letter a long time ago in the early 90's when I was a student at A&M asking him questions about writing and suggested he make some Lonesome Dove prequels and he ACTUALLY REPLIED with a real letter typed on a typewriter that answered my questions and told me there were 2 book prequels in the works and they would be called Dead Man's Walk and Comanche Moon and I still have that letter framed. RIP the GREAT Larry McMurtry.

It would be awesome if you feel like posting a pic. That's a great story regardless and thank you for sharing.

Think I own all of his books in first editions other than his first two which are tough to find. As a West Texan, the Last Picture Show means more to me than any other book. Love the book and film.

Lonesome Dove is obviously a masterpiece and Comanche Moon isn't far from it.

Terms of Endearment is classic and I actually liked the Berrybender series even if it wasn't his bread and butter.

I always had it on my bucket list to visit his library in Archer to get a few books signed but looks like I missed my chance.

Not sure if you are right but you have a very strong case. Just a amazing book. And probably the best book to mini-series we will see in this lifetime.

To those of you who enjoyed McMurtrys prose in Lonesome Dove, try Portis' , True Grit. Amazing writing that will make you almost forget the movies.

What's funny is I don't think that character was in the book - was added just for the movie.

And I enjoyed that book too. Having grown up in Houston, I remember how vivid the descriptions of the settings were. I liked All My Friends... for the same reason.

But The Last Picture Show is an absolute classic (both book and movie).

I have True Grit right next to Lonesome Dove on the bookshelf. Another great one is News of the World by Pauline Giles.
