Was listening to Hair Nation yesterday and heard Tesla's Song and Emotion (tribute to Def Leppard's Steve Clark). Got me to thinking what's the best tribute song. I'm old school, so would have to go with Back in Black or American Pie.

What say you?

This song breaks my heart. It was written for Michael Hutchence's daughter.

as the title says "Wish You Were Here", Barrett was nowhere near being a functioning human at the time it was released.

The song (and the album) turned into a tribute when LeRoi Moore died right before they went to the studio to begin work on it.

Correct. He may as well have been dead though. But to your point, you're right.

You could list Shine on You Crazy Diamond too. I've had that guitar riff as my cell notification for years.

What ever happened to Syd Barrett the poster? Did he change handles, catch a perma or just float off into the ether?

I graduated from A&M in May 1990. Working as a programmer at Texas Commerce Bank in downtown Houston, my buddy called me August 28th and said, "did you hear"? I said, "hear what"?

He sighed and said "Stevie Ray Vaughan died".

It took some convincing, I didn't believe him at first. I hung up the phone, went to the bathroom and cried.

Yeah, I was a sophomore in high school, and just arrived for morning two-a-days practice and one of my friends told me.

Here's another tribute:

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin, can you tell me where he's gone?

Abraham Martin and John. - Dion

(Not about dead musicians per se, but Martin did sing in his church choir)

U2's "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" was written as a tribute to Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of INXS, after he committed suicide. Apparently he and Bono were mates (as they say).

I must have one of the weirdest experiences concerning his death.... and I was devastated but.....

I was driving to work in late August listening to Q102 in Dallas and they were talking between breaks about SRV and playing his music and just by their tone I figured out he died although they did not say it specifically. It was just like a somber remembrance.

And I was pretty devastated I was a huge fan.

I went into my cubicle and my good friend came in not long after and we were chatting and he commented that I seemed down. I said yeah I am pretty bummed... did you hear SRV died.

He looked at me like I was nuts and I was like no seriously...... and he gets this incredulous look on his face and he says ... "yeah....a YEAR AGO".

I was like WTF???? I told him that wasn't possible I would have heard about it, etc... although at that time I did not listen to radio much I mostly listened to my own CDs etc. After checking with a few other people (no internet) I finally believed him and started backtracking to figure out how I missed it FOR A YEAR.

Well it turns out the day before he died on Sunday August 26, 1990 I boarded a flight to Hawaii and spent 10 days on various islands The Big Island and then Oahu for 2 days and then Kauai. The two days in Oahu were to catch the A&M vs Hawaii game on 9/1/1990. I returned September 6th after a redeye because my flight got bumped by the outbreak of The Gulf War and Bush commandeering planes for moving troops.

So between being gone right when he died, not watching any news while I was in Hawaii and rarely listening to radio, the distraction of the Gulf War, etc... I went a whole year not knowing he died.

August 27, 1991 was a really weird day for me as I was seriously bummed out but could not commiserate with anyone.

I was driving to Del Rio for work and listening to KZEP out of San Antonio. Alyce Winston came on the air and she said, " You have know idea how much this pains me to announce that Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash earlier this morning outside of Troy, Wisconsin."

When SRV was killed I remember one quote that really hit me hard from John Lee Hooker...

JLH said "When I heard Stevie had died I sat down on the edge of my bed and wept like a baby."

I knew at that point I was not alone in my grief.

I will never forget the pain that caused me at that moment in my car driving by myself it was such a lonely feeling and I did not know whether to turn around and go home, do my job or try to make it to the funeral I was lost.

I was fortunate enough to see SRV play live twice. It is hard for some to understand but when you saw Stevie standing in front of you playing I could literally feel the man's soul leave his body travel through his guitar and enter me. I will never find another musician that will effect the way his playing did.

Throw Cold "Day Seattle Died" in there too, though it's about Cobain too. They both died on 4/5.
