It's kind of cliche but Knockin' on Heavens Door by Gun's N Roses always gets me especially since they played it death when Dale Earnhardt died. I'm sure it has been played for other rock star deaths. What about when Chester Bennington died? That one got me and my son.

lol.....i'm picky so i'll mention....

it is Guns N' Roses not Gun's N Roses

and

Knockin On Heavens Door is not "by Guns N' Roses" it is a Bob Dylan song but maybe you just meant their version.

you never know a lot of people think

The Man Who Sold the World is a Nirvana song (Bowie)
and
Blinded By the Light is a Manfred Mann song (Springsteen)
and
All Along the Watchtower is by Jimi Hendrix (Dylan)
etc.

They weren't yet dead when the song was written but "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" has got to be near the top of this list.

Waylon's "Old Friend"...this one has always choked me up given how that plane/bus scenario played out and Waylon's last words to Buddy.

David Allan Coe's "The Ride"

Bocephus' "I Was With Red Foley (The Night He Passed Away)

George Strait's "Lefty's Gone"

Changing genres, I've always thought The (post Lionel Richie" Commodores' "NIghtshift" was outstanding.

And this one is a bit more obscure and probably won't hit you nearly as hard if you're not a Springsteen/E-Street fan but I cried the first time I heard it after the album was released. This is Bruce's tribute to Danny Federici, long time member of the E-Street Band who lost a battle with skin cancer in 2008. It ties into a song from Springsteen's second album in 1973 called "Wild Billy's Circus Story". It's called "The Last Carnival".

I graduated from A&M in May 1990. Working as a programmer at Texas Commerce Bank in downtown Houston, my buddy called me August 28th and said, "did you hear"? I said, "hear what"?

He sighed and said "Stevie Ray Vaughan died".

It took some convincing, I didn't believe him at first. I hung up the phone, went to the bathroom and cried.

Never replied to my own post before, bit it seemed appropriate this time. The above song is my favorite Arc Angels song. It was written and sung by Doyle Bramhall, a great friend of Stevie's and another incredible guitar player. Like Hendrix, Bramhall played a right-handed guitar left-handed. I didn't know this until I saw them live at the Woodlands around 92.

Below is one of my favorite Stevie Ray Vaughan songs, and also a tribute song written for a friend of his that passed away.

""Life Without You" was a song Stevie wrote after the untimely death of his great friend and mentor Charley Wirz. the song shows his love for Charley and how much he truly missed him."

If you never saw Stevie play, watch this video. This is how he played all show, every show. He gave his whole heart, soul and unmatchable talent in every performance. The comments section is worth the time, too.

Yeah, I was a sophomore in high school, and just arrived for morning two-a-days practice and one of my friends told me.

Here's another tribute:

These are the two I immediately thought of when I saw the thread title. Such a tragic day.

Does the Prince guitar solo in My Guitar Gently Weeps at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame count?

I was going to go with that. I read something about it somewhere, and it wasn't like he was intimately familiar with George Harrison or anything, he sort of agreed to it spur of the moment, acted all weird the whole time he was there and then just blew that insane solo out in front of every big musician on the planet.

Not only that but he didn't even really rehearse it. He came in late and they had already run through it a few times and Marc Mann (who plays with Jeff Lynne) was taking the solo in his absence and did even after Prince arrived cuz nobody told him not to.

They didn't have time to run through it again but Prince told them not to worry it would be fine. They deferred to him as they all really respected him, but none of them knew what to expect.

His stood to the side and was unobtrusive for the first 3:45 of what was a really nice tribute cover to that point. Then he just shredded one of the greatest guitar solos of all time without rehearsal. The looks on the other musicians faces was pure awe - and real - they had not heard it before done by Prince. Tom Petty said he was just shaking his head in awe.

Widely considered one of the greatest guitar solos ever done.

Yea, just watched the video. Insane. The guitar throw and walkoff at the end was a great way to cap it too.

'pure talent to take off guitar and throw it but not lose the hat'
'The quiet guy at a party that nobody talks to and then he suddenly disappears with the 2 hottest girls there. And the next time you see him, he doesn't even remember the party. Thats Prince.'

He threw it up to heaven cause he knew he'd want it 4 years later to give God guitar lessons.

I'll be missing you - Puff Daddy and Faith Evans

It's not necessarily a great song, but definitely had a big moment in the 90's.

There's a lot of great tribute rap songs from back then (lots of early deaths).

Not a tribute song, but this performance was a tribute to Chester. Thought this was really well done.
