This gives me nerd fantasy goose flesh!

I'd rather have 1st Age stories, but I understand how they had to do 2nd Age. And the Tolkien Estate keeps strong editorial control to prevent Hollywood from ruining it.

I'm in.

I guess that estate was asleep at the wheel when The Hobbit movies were being made, then. I say that as someone who enjoyed those movies but knows that those were not the book.

I don't think they had any ability to control anything with The Hobbit. Christopher Tolkien also had a pretty contentious relationship with adaptations of his father's work, as in he hated it. I'm sure licensing out The Silmarillion came with granting a good bit of control.

I hope so. That is one book that I've never picked up even though I have it on my shelf.

And I actually did enjoy the Hobbit trilogy, but there in was really the problem - the book does not lend itself to 3 3+ hour movies. They added entirely too much in an effort to make it a prequel trilogy to the LOTR trilogy.

Sources:

The Silmarillion as well as the appendices to the LOTR. Perhaps some from other sources, but mostly those two.

It sounds like it will all be "Second Age," which is when Sauron forged the one ring.

The stories from the Silmarillion are amazing. Enough source material for a dozen movies.

I recall enjoying the Silmarillion as much or more as LOTR despite it's slightly more complex nature.

It's a great book but definitely a tough read.
