I'm definitely a fan. Used to see him a few times a year at least around Austin and one of his songs was the first dance at our wedding.

I think the reasons you mention are probably right. Plus, a lot of his most known / live show regulars were from early in his career, some were too adult themed for much mainstream appeal, etc.

Idk. I like that you used Jason Isbell as an example, he's just as polarized by listeners as Bob. Isbell is an anomaly to me. He's less palatable vocally than most pure "singer/songwriters" out there. I think it's probably attributed to two things what songs gain traction and what kind of artists they want to become after that. Some folks I know that made careers out of music either gig as a lifestyle nonstop while others have stayed behind the scenes to write more. It maybe isn't that black and white but that's how I sometimes see it.

I've seen him probably a dozen times in twenty years. Each show is different. Different bands, instrumental accompaniments, genres (even with the same songs in some instances), formats.

Amazing entertainer.

Best one I saw him at was a singer songwriter set at the mucky duck. If you're in Houston and have never been, do yourself a favor and find an act you liked to see there.

I think what's sets guys like Isbell apart from BS is song relatability.

BS has some good songs but I don't think they're as relatable to people as Isbell.

Again...Not to say there not great songs but it's that relatability he's missing to push him into the really upper echelon.

We started listening and going to Bob shows when we moved to Wimberley in 2001. Gruene Hall, Nutty Brown, Moody, Saxon, festivals, etc. every show is different. Haven't been to any in the last several years but the guy is very musically talented and commands the stage.

I go see Bob just about any chance I get. Just moved to Austin pretty close to Saxon Pub and I can not wait for them to reopen and resume the weekly BS show

Compared to Schneider, Isbell has had more success both as a solo artist and with Drive-By-Truckers. He's also an amazing guitar player. Bob has built up and maintained a legit following and had a great run of albums with Lonelyland, I'm Good Now, and The Californian. LL was a big deal when it came out and made me a fan for life. The guy can command a stage better than just about anyone and bagged Sandra Bullock so there's that.
