The acting is terrible. The message is sometimes clunky, sometimes touching. It hits on racism, religion, morality, redemption, work ethic, and PTSD. I love the movie but hate most of its parts.

Clash of the Titans (original) and Flash Gordon with Sam Jones. Both extremely low quality and campy...can't pass either on the dial. Must stop and watch every time.
Transformers sequels - amazing CGI, terrible in literally every other aspect

The bad - Crappy dialogue, questionable acting at times (Yipee!), and Jar Jar
The good - Fantastic art design for Naboo, amazing sound design, the podrace, epic soundtrack, Darth Maul, and the fight choreography.

Michael Bay movies in general. Brilliant action sequences. God-awful in just about every other aspect.
Titanic and Top Gun. Both good movies with bad romantic storylines. I understand why Titanic focused on a love story, so you feel sympathetic towards the characters, it just only appealed to teenage girls. Top Gun is just bad when planes aren't involved.

Were the visuals that awesome? I just finished watching all 3 with one of my kids, and after the way that LOTR combined practical and visual effects, it felt like a very lazy step down with all the CGI. I kept staring at Orlando Bloom's botox CGI smooth face and shaking my head, not to mention all his over the top "gotta be better that LOTR" stunts.Cromagnum said:

I got the feeling PJ really wanted to film 2 scenes, - Gollum vs. Bilbo in riddles and Bilbo talking to Smaug - and to see Ian McKellen as Gandalf again - and decided to wrap 3 not so great movies around that.
