Watching Army of the Dead. It's Zac Snyder and seems real good so far. Any way.

Something I was thinking about. Most zombie movies these days seem to be the biological type zombie. I seem to remember as a kid that zombies were a spiritual type monster, right? When I say spiritual, I mean like voodoo curses and such. I don't think the dawn of the dead movies even had a "cause", but some time in the late nineties we start getting the zombies caused by a biological reasons like disease or government test.

I was just thinking and wondered if any one had any thoughts on it.

Maybe taking the spiritual aspect out was to avoid any judgment on religion entirely.

Yeah. I was also thinking maybe the virus angle is more believable than a voodoo curse. I thinks there's been a tendency in modern horror to bring in realism.

In the I Am Legend novel it was biological. (1950's)

I think the original Night of the Living Dead mentioned some radiation from a probe that had visited Venus.

As I remember it the voodoo zombies were mindless slaves, created by and in service to a witchdoctor. They werent the flesh eating type. The most recent film that I saw dealing with these was The Serpent and the Rainbow.

Making zombies fast was the best thing to do for zombie movies.

Army of the Dead is terrible. Like, I want my hours back, terrible. It's not good in a good way, and it's not bad in a good way. It's just awful.

I thought it was a great idea and it started off fun...it lost me with the intelligent zombies.

I had hopes for Fear the Walking Dead where they would show how a normal society slowly devolved into the Walking Dead apocalypse. But they screwed it up by doing a time jump. That could have been damn interesting, but the writers were lazy as hell.

Eh never really liked a spiritual aspect to a zombie origin. Works for other monsters but I find a virus that turns people into mindless killing machines much more frightening.

The 28 days/weeks zombies were the most frightening by far. Zombies amped up on adrenaline that makes them fast.

Incorrect. While Omega Man is my favorite, the original was "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price.

Isn't an intelligent zombie just a vampire?

I did like that warm bodies movie a few years back with Nicholas Hoult. I remember it being pretty funny.

Zombieland is probably my favorite though.

Getting back to the topic of the original post, this is probably the best explanation. There are real diseases out there that do have zombie-like results, though most frequently in other animals. The closest that affects humans would be rabies (there are some creepy ass pictures and videos of the effects), but there are several cases in the animal world, including the fungus that controls spiders and grows from them that Last of Us was based off of, and another fungus that forces ants to climb somewhere high so they'll get eaten by a bird.

It's always scarier when something is within the realm of plausibility, even if it's a stretch.

Woke up thinking about this because I watched Army of the Dead last night. I don't have a problem with this but would actually like to see a comeback of slow zombies.

What I do not like are intelligent zombies. It ruins the point of these movies for me and I don't really consider them zombie movies if they evolve and become intelligent.

I never said they were zombies. I was referring to the movies made with that particular book as the "source material" in chronological order. There were a few more over the years that were total crap that never were publicized.
