I don't know how I missed this now 10 year old show but man it is good. If you like period dramas that are not shy about sex, violence, or Catholic history it is well worth the three seasons watch. I can totally see why they didn't continue past three seasons because the production budget appears to be insanely huge!

Just beautiful sets, great acting, great story. Highly recommend if you have access to Showtime.

Felt like a spiritual sequel to the Tudors, enjoyable enough. Kinda wish it had been popular enough for them to keep doing similar shows with different eras. Feel like Catherine the Great's story would have been good explored in the same style, or Lord Byron, or plenty of others.

It's more of a comedy than a show like these, but if you haven't seen The Great yet, highly recommend. About Catherine the Great's rise to power

I think the last 30 years of the Romanoffs or marriage of King Louis and Marie Antoinette would be great storytelling.

Show had moments of greatness, but like a lot of premium serial shows, got into the territory of high-quality soap opera in the third season. The truth itself probably got soap operish at times too, but it's hard to separate the reality of renaissance notables from the rumors and myths created by their enemies.
