Did I miss a thread on this? In the words of the great Bart Scott, "Can't Wait!".

Am I the only one who thinks the first one is just ok and more of a representation on mental illness vs anything to do with the Joker of DC comics? It's a film that could basically stand on its own but he puts on clown make up and has a small scene with Bruce and thus it is now the Joker for marketing purposes.

I agree with you. Joaquin Phoenix was really good IMO, but I hated the plot. At the end of the movie I didn't know if I was supposed to feel sorry for him or angry at him. And it also made me feel weird about Batman beating up mentally ill people.

I liked it, it was an interesting take on the character.
Dark Knight Joker was interesting because you didn't know which story was real, he would use whatever origin story to fit his needs.
Leto Joker as not good. Didn't care for the thugged out look. Snyder cut made him slightly better.
This version does well with his origin and all the things that led him to be the way he is. You aren't supposed to be sympathetic to him at the end but do have a bit more insight as to why he is the way he is. Not sure what they'll do for 2

It was depressing more than anything. Sorta like Requiem for a Dream. Have no desire to see either twice.

If the title of the movie had not been "The Joker" would anyone have thought that movie had anything to do with a comic book villain? It was 2 plus hours of Joaquin Phoenix playing himself.

should be a one-and-done movie.

This. I liked it, but absolutely should not be a sequel. Why can't Hollywood ever leave well enough alone?

Did not care for it at all. Kept waiting for it to get interesting. It did not. Wish I had the time back.

Sequel can't possibly be worse.

My point is that this isn't even an origin story, this is in no way a character that would ever go toe to toe with Batman in any mental capacity. I don't even consider it a new take on the character, it's just a completely different character and story with Jokers face on it. Joker was mentally insane like him but the similarities end there.

Surprised by the comments. Each to their own but I loved it when I saw it in the theater. Then I watched it again with my parents and my Dad hated it and I appreciated it even more after a second viewing.

I also felt the ending left the perfect segue for a sequel and excited to see where it goes.

It can be that but also a great movie.

Spot on, especially the Requiem comparison.

That's why Gladiator is forever in my top 10, never went back and sullied it up with a sequel.

Wasn't for a lack of trying, iirc. Sequel was supposed to be Maximus in Elysium on an epic journey to reunite with his family, I think. Not sure how far it got or who was attached.

It was better than ok... I thought it was very good and Phillips copied all the right tropes from movies like Taxi Driver and King of Comedy etc... not that there's anything wrong with that.

But he made some big choices in the movie around the realities of mental illness that I'll agree with you making it a Joker movie cheapened it significantly.

Nothing personal, but I hope it happens just to blow this post up. Hollywood sucks.

Oh no. I would also use the laugh/cry emoji if I had it. Too funny.

Joker was very good standalone, but yeah, the mentally ill twerp that is really just a complete ****up just doesn't fit the overall Batman narrative. Still a good movie tho

I get the arguments that it's a great standalone, but the ending really begs for a continuation of the story imho. This is my favorite cinematic orgin story for a comic book villain ever. The singular focus allowed us to experience depth that I can't remember from any other attempt in a film.

I would have been great with them never doing a sequel, but toward the end, after we are shown abuse, isolation, madness, failure, and depravity, we are shown a glimpse of that personality type gaining power and following.

Personally, it left me wanting to see what he will do with it.

I was experiencing serious comicbook hero/villain fatigue until Joker dropped. Given the tone and story I probably need my own head examined. Haha.

Same thing won't happen here.

Joker 2 will be set in Venezuela, not Thailand.
