Grammy-winning singer B.J. Thomas died on Saturday at his home in Arlington, Texas, from complications due to stage four lung cancer. He was 78.

Among his hits was the 1966 cover of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" which became Thomas's first million-selling single and "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song," as well as "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," which won the Academy Award for best original song.

Sorry to hear this.

My granddaughter and I are going to watch "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" tomorrow (that's the movie that "Raindrops" is in). I'll be remembering him.

He's kind of like Johnny Nash in that I was surprised when I found out he was from Houston. Both had one or two huge hits (and other good songs, of course) that made them better known on the radio and in movies than they were at home.

He is from Rosenberg, not Houston. Graduated from Lamar Consolidated.

I absolutely wore out a BJ Thomas greatest hits CD in the mid 90's.

My personal faves:

And of course, a staple for any 80's kid:

His voice seemed to get better as he aged, which is a rarity.

BJ's nephew is a good friend of mine and I got to hang out with him and his family a couple times in the recent past. BJ was such a nice person and a great performer. I knew he was sick but I still hate to see him go.

I saw him in concert in Amarillo in 1970 I think, right after Raindrops made him super famous. He was just starting to get back into gospel music.

His voice is incredible. Many of his songs sound dated now but I have always enjoyed them.

My God. Thanks for posting that. I'd never heard it before. Un-freaking real.

Wow...that's now my favorite version of that song. Incredible voice.

My favorite song from his amazing collection. Just brings me back to my childhood in the early 80s. This song playing in the barn while I feed the cows and horses.

So many great songs. A personal favorite. Note the background vocals by the Beach Boys starting about midway through the song.

When I think BJ Thomas I actually do think Growing Pains as my first thought. Great theme. Rip.
