I understand movies are NOT why we remember Memorial Day but I always look forward to seeing old and newer war movies on Memorial Day because they're usually on tv especially TCM and it's my way of remembering my Grandpa and his brothers who fought in WW II. My son and I watched Sergeant York and Patton today. So what are some good ones you like to watch? Mine are:

Sergeant York - True story of Faith as well
Patton - never gets old hearing that theme!
To Hell and Back - one of my favorites and true as well as amazing AND hero plays himself.
The Longest Day - best all star lineup of a classic movie and a really good story of D-Day
Battle of the Bulge - another good one.
Saving Private Ryan - the ultimate war movie
Midway (new one) - really enjoyed this
1917 - not a lot of WW I movies so this was a good one
The Dirty Dozen - war movie? Maybe but it's a great story lol
The Great Escape - Steve McQueen on a motorcycle outrunning nazis, yes please.
Where Eagles Dare - Clint going after nazis is awesome.
Escape from Sobibor - true TV movie with Rutger Hauer about an escape from a nazi death camp.

Band of Brothers - miniseries not a movie but the best one in all of television trumping even Lonesome Dove because it's true.

Few in number compared to WWII but there are quite a few high quality films about or set during the Great War:
Paths of Glory
Lawrence of Arabia
They Shall Not Grow Old
Gallipoli
King and Country
The African Queen
All Quiet on the Western Front
War Horse
The Grand Illusion
A Farewell to Arms
Johnny Got His Gun
Wings

And a couple more where the emphasis of the film is not the war but certainly an contributing factor to the story
The Great Waldo Pepper
Tolkien

Cool list. Thanks! I have seen a ton of older movies and as a movie nut I'm kind of ashamed to say that I have never seen Lawrence of Arabia. Is it really THAT good as all of the accolades that have been given to it? I just don't want to be expecting a lot and then be disappointed aka Citizen Kane lol.

Sergeant York is one of my all time favorites. first time i saw it was in school, i think in 5th grade.

My girlfriend of 5 years has always refused to watch any black and white movies with me. I managed to get her to watch this with me this weekend. It took all three days of the weekend to get through it but late last night at the end when he was in New York, she turned to me and said, he needs to go home. Gracie is waiting for him. I'll take it as a win, even though she was disappointed that they didn't show them actually getting married.

It's one of my all time favorite movies too! I didn't see it until like 2000 or something? and my wife was gone one weekend and I rented Sgt. York and My Dog Skip from Blockbuster and my emotions were all over the place that day lol. It's so worth reading about the Real Alvin York as well.

I've always intended to read the book but never did. I bought the kindle version on Amazon this morning and Sergeant York and his People.

For me, I found LoA to be fantastic. Very compelling characters and situations. As I'm not as well versed in WWI as I am WWII, I can't comment on historical accuracy, but from what I do know, it seemed on point there. While it is a long movie, I highly recommend spending the 3 hours to watch this one.

Yep. Watch it on the biggest screen possible. The first time saw it was when it was restored and rereleased to theatres in 89-90 in was in awe. On the other hand, probably not the film you want to watch if you're looking for historical accuracy.

At the 7 min 20 sec mark is where they talk about Lawrence of Arabia

This is when I first saw it as well, my last year at A&M. Sometime that Fall if I recall right, and I want to say it showed at old Manor East theater, one of Schulman's theaters. Saw with my then girlfriend (no, she was not the one) and like you, I was in awe.
