I wonder if the writers will have her realize that her comedy is being hampered by her beliefs and progressive ideas. The roast episode was particularly telling. DJ wanting to yell her catchphrase, "What a c***!" turned out hilarious even though you could tell that Ava thought it would be hacky and offensive. Sometimes funny is just funny.Joan Wilder said:

I agree that Ava is being written for the audience to roll their eyes at her. The bigger challenge I've had with her character is that the show wants us to believe she's a talented comedian, and she rarely says anything funny. This season they've done better at showing her to be a good comedy *writer* - punching up jokes and writing. Einbinder's acting is improving but she's the weakest link on the show.
The supporting cast and ensemble is fantastic. Smart is clearly loving this role, and it's a refreshing to see this complex, flawed, talented and driven character.
(Also not trying to impugn characters from different generations. The intergenerational relationships on this show are handled very well and one of my favorite parts.)
