52 years ago Jimi laid down the most astonishing piece of live music ever recorded over two nights at the filmore east. I think of him as a once in a couple hundred years musician and I think people will study him for hundreds of years to come. He was so ahead of his time that the most respected musicians then and now are still trying to figure out how he did it. Never seen anyone attempt a cover. You can listen to the various band of gypsy recordings all you want, but I think this lineup (mitchell/cox) at isle of wight was the best and captures him in his prime right before his death. He flew in at like 1am in the morning exhausted and had terrible sounds issues that night which you can see him frustrated with at :40. That said pay particular attention to :50-2:30. Don't think he looked at the fret board that night. Just played. No one before or since has been more influential on the guitar and I don't see that changing in my lifetime. Hope I'm wrong.



edit: this guy is as close to covering hendrix as I've ever heard. He has a great youtube channel. World class musician. Fun fact; hendrix unfortunately never played this live and it's one of my favorite pieces of music.

Good stuff! There was a part in the ZZ Top doc on Prime recently (Little Band From Texas, maybe?) where they were playing some club early on in a California gig. They were covering a Hendrix song - well, as the recording suggests - and Jimi was THERE and kind of watching with an approving smirk.

you know your music. Hendrix thought very highly of gibbons when he was a nobody and that's saying A LOT. I put Billy in my top 5. Listen to their old stuff. Chevrolet off rio grande mud is a hidden gem. If that solo doesn't scream texas blues then i don't know what does. I think billy invented the pinch harmonic or certainly brought it mainstream..

good example of what homme is talking about with the hendrix bend at :40-:43, and 1:40-2:10 is so crisp. So good.

I've watched too many Hendrix covers on YouTube. Guys claiming "this" is how you play like Hendrix. And so many get kinda close but IMO don't fully understand Jimi. And I'm talking about really good, experienced guitar players. Many just end up sounding like SRV covering Jimi.

This guy above's tone is spot on. But like everyone else the feel just isn't close. Jimi's has fluctuations in his playing that I feel like no one gets. Like he's actually improvising it on the spot. His attack will go in and out and there's subtle hesitations that bring life to his playing. This just sounds like he knows exactly what he's about to play next. Like reading music off a sheet. Like he's in a rush. And I get it. No one will ever recreate Hendrix perfectly. It's impossible to 100% replicate another guitarist, especially Hendrix. But still, I think there are adjustments that he could make to give this a little more life.

But I'm being nitpicky. Overall very good cover.

Completely agree. Hendrix just can't be replicated. Hendrix never played it the same way twice. Neither did Stevie. My understanding is the Hendrix estate still has unreleased music and footage but won't share it. Could be off on that but I believe that to be correct.

Hendrix didn't play guitar. He translated music from a different plane. Almost supernatural.

What was cool about SRV (other than having the same gift that Jimi had) was that he could take Hendrix songs and play them as good or better than Hendrix. But if Hendrix never existed, neither would SRV.

This is a great point. Jimi was channeling. I actually think Stevie had better chops than Hendrix but not by much. In my book theres Hendrix a ton of air below him and then Clapton srv gibbons et al. Like I said I don't think we'll ever see anything like him in this life. He will be studied for centuries.

Daniel Lanois always had a Hendrix essence to me. He's obviously a very different musician, playing a very different instrument and creating very different music. That being said, the essence of Hendrix to me was creating these masterpiece soundscapes and improvisation. Anyway, I suggest you check him out if you haven't ever before. Just keep an open mind.



Also, he's playing with Brian Blade, who might be the best drummer on planet earth.

When I was a teenager working at McDonalds, a middle aged guy came in who was wearing a gold chain that said "Jim Morrison", a tattoo that was either Jim Morrison's face or name (I forget), and wearing a Doors shirt.

I took his order and while we were waiting for his food, he took the (unprompted) opportunity to ask me if I knew who Jim Morrison was, tell me about Jim's life, and told me that he was going to fly to France to visit his grave. It was like he was trying to spread the word of Jesus or something.

Rather than come away with a newfound respect for Jim Morrison, I felt sorry for this guy. That his life revolved way too much around a musician who had been dead for over 2 decades. That maybe he should aspire to achieve something good on his own instead.

OP reminds me of that guy.
