Only saw Tenacious D once open up for String Cheese Incident in Austin circa 2000 and thought they were great, especially Jack Black coming on during SCI's encore to sing the vocals on "Tom Sawyer".

Thoughts on this new release/bit? The first happens to be my favorite Beatles song of all time. I dig it and all of its absurdity.

I've never seen them live, but I've been a big fan of "The D" for 20 years. I feel like those guys love classic rock more than most people realize. When they spoof it, they channel some real genuine vibes from some of the most intricate songs from the 60s-80s. Their originals, ie Wonder Boy, Tribute, etc show some real talent. I'm not sure they could pull off a serious song at this point.

Long story just a little longer- great band and I'm glad they bring some great music back into a small part of the modern day mainstream.

I mean their whole shtick is built on loving rock and metal, so I think most people realize it?

Also, really wanted to watch em when they played in Brooklyn in 2018, but that sold out pretty quickly. Still gotta watch them live. They're one of my favorite bands that I've yet to see in person.

That was amazing.

Jack does not look well at all, but man does he make me laugh. No man on earth can do more comedically with just facial expressions.

Diggin' KG's new look.

5 stars all around

Love Tenacious D. I must say however - the movie does not hold up upon rewatch. I think seeing it in theaters at age 18 was the best way to do it.

Saw them live in ~2013 and it was pretty great.

Tell me this song doesn't rock:

Today I learned that the D won a Grammy a few years back!

Doesn't hold up?!

You obviously can't see he's the man, as I hear no applause. For he is more than a man, he's shiny golden god!

But really... Kickapoo and Beelzeboss? I would argue those are their two best songs; even over Wonderboy and Tribute.

If you haven't seen this check it out! They do Master Exploder live and there's a technical error where the playback fails since they never technically sing that song live.but due to the error they say screw it and do it live and it's actually really good!

Wow. Showing your age, young whippersnapper. The hbo shorts and the album and tour (saw them at Waterloo Park in 2002) was high comedy in my college days. There is not an objective metric that puts either of those songs above Tribute and Wonderboy, which were comedic and rock genius and original.

Lol... you're hardly older than me. And Kickapoo and Beelzeboss beat Tribute and Wonderboy, but thanks for playing!

I'm not arguing that the Pick of Destiny album doesn't hold up, just the movie. That Kickapoo movie intro still rules, as does Master Exploder. The part with Ben Stiller is pretty great.

What I'm saying is, the rest of the movie is pretty subpar. The bits in between the songs. Some are good, some are pretty lame. Kage training Jack, for example, or Jack getting beaten up and rescued by KG. Your mileage may vary on Sasquatch.

My wife enjoyed the HBO show (more or less) but started falling asleep throughout the movie. There's a lot of wasted potential in there, IMO - best left to your memories than revisiting 15 years later.

i was at that same show and posted the following story in another thread on this board (about celebs who seem to be good people):

true personal story about jack black...

me and a buddy went to austin to see tenacious d open for the string cheese incident in 2002. there was a group in a pop-up canopy selling copies of the tenacious d CD along with a "VIP" pass that gave you access to a meet and greet after their set finished. it seemed a little sketchy and was only $15, but we figured why not. they told us to meet in a certain area after the set.

fast forward to after their set and, of course, it was a scam and about 20 of us were just hanging out where we were told. after about a half-hour, we were about to leave when a security guard came by and someone told him what happened. he told us to sit tight, then about 20 minutes later, they took us to a different area where jack and kyle met with us anyway, took pictures and signed autographs. they could not have been nicer and more down to earth. i bet they spent about an hour just chatting with people.

Huge D fan, and I have to agree about the movie not really holding up. In fact I went to see it in the theater (I was also 18 at the time, btw), and thought it was okay.

That said, the album is still absolute greatness. Kickapoo, Master Exploder, Beelzeboss, The Metal...all great.

I still prefer the original album though. Me and my friends were obsessed with it in high school, and still quote Drive Thru to each other to this day.

As for the HBO shorts, I saw those on the Complete Masterworks DVD and some were hilarious, but man there were some weird ones. (Butt baby anyone?)

When I think of Tenacious D I either think of Tribute or F her Gently. Definitely a NSFW song, but hilarious nonetheless.

When my wife and I were looking at honeymoon destinations, somehow we got onto Zanzibar and I spent a week trying to figure out how to make th flights work. I also spent the whole week walking around the house singing that line.

I saw an incredible moe. show at Stubb's (my favorite all time band) and they came out to encore and played that on demand per my buddy's wife at the time who yelled it out from the rail as I was standing next to her in front of Chuck Garvey. It kicked ass:
