Underrated cinematic masterpiece or overwrought emotional drivel? What say you?

It is really strange watching it since Robin Williams ended his life the way he did. Really interesting revisiting it recently.

I think most people panned it. I thought it was really good when I saw it, but haven't rewatched in years.

I was the same way. I really enjoyed it then, but I don't know that I ever saw it a second time.

I remember seeing this in theaters as a kid and it freaking me out, especially all the hell stuff.

just rewatched this a few weeks ago. I've always liked it. I enjoy movies that do an original take on what the afterlife may be. I also like Heaven Can Wait and Defending Your Life.

When I am asked what my least favorite movie of all time is, it's this one. Came out in high school and saw it theaters. I hated it. And I love melancholy kinda sad movies. But this one was pretty terrible in my opinion.

Don't take it as Biblical Truth of what Heaven or Hell will really be like but it's visually stunning and I liked the movie when I saw it and thought Robin Williams did a great job. I've seen it a time or two since then but not for a while. May need to rewatch it soon.

I remember thinking during its release that everyone seemed to either love it or hate it. This thread looks to confirm that.

Some of my thoughts after sitting on it for a while. It is a visually stunning movie. The concept is very moving and very much in line with the 90's era thought on romanticism. It was jarring when I first saw it to see Robin Williams play a serious role. Now it is jarring to see him in a role in a movie in which suicide is a huge part. Still unsure if I actually like it or not.

Really ironic and sad to see a guy die of suicide IRL star in a movie saving his wife in the afterlife from suicide. My wife and I spoke of this last month oddly enough as she's such a huge fan of Robin Williams.

I can remember watching it back when I was at A&M, pretty sure I rented it from Blockbuster. I can recall it being intensely visual but not much beyond that. It's one of those movies I watched once and never felt and urge to revisit. Given what happened to Robin Williams since then it would make it pretty difficult to get through.

It was fine, I thought. I actually remember the book a lot more distinctly. As I recall, Richard Matheson did a bunch of research, particularly drawing from accounts of near death experience to create an afterlife that was more "scientific" in nature.

I had no idea this was written by Matheson. Nor that he had a whole bunch more beyond I Am Legend that were adapted to screen. Don't really remember the movie except that the visuals were exceptional.

And after three attempts, they still haven't done that one right

No both spellings are acceptable

The act is come
The outcome is the other one

Funny that this thread topic comes up.

Back in jr high or high school my best friend josh and I were meeting at the movies to see something. I don't remember what. Josh got there first and found out it was sold out. So, he got us tickets this movie.

Fast forward to last Sunday when I went and saw "The Green Knight". Josh's wife texted me asking how it was. I told her I hated it. Her response was "Josh wants to know if it's as bad as 'What Dreams May Come'"

Yeah, I read the book after seeing Omega and Smith's. Wasn't even close and I'm not one of those books > movies guys. Except for right now. That book is great and especially considering its age.
