I just got through watching The Guardian with Kevin Costner again. I hate the fact that he dies at the end but thought that it had to end that way. What are some more examples of this from movies you've seen?

Is this just another way to ask what is the saddest movie ending?

I guess to explain, you would ideally like a different outcome, but understand the need of the selected outcome.

Contrast The Guardian with a movie such as The Count of Monte Cristo where everything that you wanted to happen at the end actually happened...and it seemed to be the perfect ending.

It wasn't the perfect ending. Was just taking yalls temp today.

Seems like it. I can't come up with any other way the OP makes sense. So, you know, stuff like a teen boy being forced to shoot his rabid dog in Old Yeller or Gus dying towards the end of Lonesome Dove.

I hated....hated.....HATED the ending to the movie. Hated it so much it ruined a good adaptation of one of my favorite King stories. I've loved the story since I was a teen in the late 80's and had been waiting impatiently for a movie adaptation of it. The book ending, to me, is so much more apocalyptic and bleak. It's an ending like the ending of the original "Dawn of the Dead." Sure, the survivors made it out in a helicopter; but they had little fuel, little ammo and little supplies. They were probably dead within a day. And the woman was pregnant. Pretty bleak if you think about it. Finding out in the movie that the mist was created by the military and hadn't actually gone much farther than that area and just disappeared suddenly was just so much bullsh*t. Haven't watched the movie again simply because of that.

One of my most hated movie endings ever.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. Sucks that he had to go to Fords Theater at the end.

Return of the King. I liked the first 2 endings, then got bored during the middle 17 endings, then liked the last one.

I felt like Terminator 2 had the perfect ending to the franchise, but I hated that the T-800 had to be terminated to make the story work.

I thought Atomic Blonde was a pretty perfect spy/action flick until the dumb 2nd ending.

I hated the 'copout' feel of the Sopranos ending when it happened but it's aged pretty well.

the guy killing everyone in the car when they were minutes away from being rescued was more than I expected from the film.

I despised certain aspects of it.

City of Angels. I love that he got one day with her, but it sucks that he gave up eternity to lose her the next day.
