At the risk of hijacking the thread, I can tell a Freeman Coliseum, George Jones story. I spent 10 years of my life selling advertising for KBUC radio in San Antonio. Either side of 1983, a local union comes to us with a fund raiser package show of George Jones and Jerry Lee Lewis. In addition to the advertising, the station ran all kinds of ticket giveaways and our DJ's MCed (sp?) the event. The union brought in five or six third rate bands from California, most of which were not C/W and not too well received by the crowd. Then my DJ has to tell the crowd that Jerry Lee Lewis didn't show up. Fans were used to that with Jones over the years.
So his back up band, The Jones Boys come out to do the warm up and the crowd is yelling "We want George".
"We want George". Then the lead man gets on the mic and says "Aw shut up, for $15.00 you're lucky to be in the same building with George Jones, much less hear him sing. And that sports fans was the last time they ever sold glass beer bottles at the Freeman as they just rained down on the band.
So out comes George, in green pajamas, he wasn't anything but drunk on his ass, been on the Jim Beam for several hours, Band's playing Race is On, he's singing He Stopped Loving Her Today. At that point they stopped the show.
Last I saw of Jones, he was riding off on a motorcycle with some old hde.

The person that is not willing to fight and die, if need be, for his country has no right to life.
