What are some overlooked sequels that you never gave a shot but ended up impressing you?

I'm not necessarily talking about sequels better than their originals, but more so movies that generally never even get mentioned.

For me, The Exorcist III and Psycho II both really impressed me in how good they were. I hadn't read or heard much about them beforehand, so I didn't realize that both of those have a bit of a cult following. You just never hear about them at all really.

Technically I think the Matrix sequels count. People act like they are abominations, but they are actually pretty solid movies on a standalone basis. It's the comparison that brings them down.

  • Always liked Die Hard 2 more than most seem to.
  • Jaws 2. Doesn't touch the original, but it's still a ton of fun.
  • Similarly, never understood why folks bag on The Lost World (aka Jurassic 2)
  • Terminator 3 does some really interesting things. Better than you remember.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch is probably the most meta sequel ever made. It's a very different movie as an adult than it was when I was a kid.

It does for me. I love that movie. There is actually a third Riddick film which I did not existed until recently. Apparently has Katee Sackhoff in it too so will be watching.

And he's making a 4th film as well.

I know that people usually rank Raiders #1 but Last Crusade is actually my favorite Indy film.

Last Crusade is a really feel good movie and surprisingly religious. His dad lighting Indy up "for blasphemy" and the leap of faith at the end is some pretty strong Christianity in a big tent pole movie. Plus one of the best-delivered lines of the movie -

The quest for the grail is not archeology, it's a race against evil. If it is captured by the Nazis the armies of darkness will march all over the face of the earth. Do you understand me?

Plus that opening sequence with River Phoenix, which back in the day, my dad thought they were saying that they were in Arizona for that film when his name came on the screen, and the actual presence of the Knight at the end is fantastic.

The Last Crusade is also my favorite of the series. I love all the scenes with Indy and his dad.

I'm not sure I'd call The Last Crusade underrated. Even if it's most people's #2, they all still think it's great.

Another one for me is Grease 2. Also, I like the 2nd and 3rd Tremors.

For me, I rank TLC as my third favorite movie of all time, behind The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the List Ark, so hardly under-rated.
