I don't know how many times I've watched The Wire all the way through. Not as many as some, but probably 4 times over the years. It's brilliant in the sense that the characters get deeper every time through. Few shows are like that, it's a credit to the writing and the actors. Omar's relationship with the Baltimore PD has always been fascinating.

It's an old show, but I'll respect The Wire enough to use a spoiler tag

The way they build that Omar's death is so brilliant, but it's something you can only catch in the rewatches. The first time through, it's so random and almost a let down because you wanted to see the big showdown with Omar and Chris/Snoop. But then when you go back through, and you realize Kenard one of the kids in season 1 pretending to be Omar after the shooting, and that it's that moment that makes Bunk chew Omar out about how his violence propagates. And then to have that kid who idolized and glorified Omar kill him randomly in a convenience store.

The BPD reaction to his death. Bunk is disappointed more than anything, but none of them really seem to care. The coroners can't even tag his toe correctly, and the Sun decides to cover the fire, but not his murder. Yet at the end, Marlo walks up on a group talking about Omar and fabricating a glorious shootout, and Michael ends up picking up his legacy. Interesting depiction on what matters in two very different Baltimore worlds.

As for Michael K Williams, he'll get lots of credit for Omar and Chalky White and a ton of other roles, but I think I really appreciated the way he was able to lampoon himself on Community. I don't know that a lot of serious actors would be that willing to do a story arc like that, but he jumped in with both feet. Based on what people who knew him are saying, of course he would be willing to do that.

Many great characters on The Wire but Omar was my favorite.

Season 3 on the Kenard imitation right? The conversation with Bunk was season three while Bunk is looking for the missing service weapon.

He did an interview on The Ticket years ago. He was legitimately humble and funny.

Omar is a top 5 tv character.
I don't ever think I've had an actor convince me he was the character more than him. What a talent.

Pretty sure I read OD.

ETA from OP link:
Michael K. Williams who portrayed notorious stickup man Omar Little on "The Wire" was found dead of a suspected heroin overdose in his Brooklyn penthouse Monday afternoon, law enforcement sources told The Post.

Williams, 54, was discovered face-down and unresponsive in the dining room of his luxury Williamsburg pad with what appeared to be heroin on the kitchen table, sources said.

Not to get off topic, but when I was given morphine (which is less potent) after back surgery, I remember thinking "Wow, I get the appeal."

Miss the old BaD radio days. Great interview and thanks for sharing. It's criminal that this show or the actors were never nominated for any major awards.

Check out Hap and Leonard if you enjoy him in a comedic role. Its him and James Purefoy. Never saw Michael K. Williams in a role that I didn't immensely enjoy. Rest easy brother.

Marc Maron reposted an interview from earlier this year on his podcast stream. Some of the topics involving addiction hit hard knowing what happens. But at the time he seemed to be in a really good and healthy place. Very sad.
