I started his audiobook today, there's some stuff from his childhood that is ****ing gut wrenching. It makes you upset and it's hard to believe a guy that is so beloved and that treated everyone so well had some pretty horrific childhood events. I had no idea.

Conan was easily the best for me, even while Leno and Letterman were on. But I'm also a sucker for the super weird and random comedy bits they'd do.
Same tastes for me. Conan late 90s to early aughts was strong night in night out. I can see how he isn't the commercial comedy of Fallon.
HOWEVER, the absolute idiocy of giving Leno his own comedy show prior to the local news before Conan destroyed any audience looking for a late night comedy show. Instead of big tv dramas handing local news viewers, who were then turned over to the tonight show, it was a massive programming disruption for which Conan was blamed. Dumb.

Conan was done so dirty, I have never forgiven the networks and for the most part quit watching late night. I know that Conan didn't appeal to everyone, but he is a much better comic's comic and that was where he belonged IMO.
I posted it upthread but it deserved a repost after you brought up the Leno thing. Conan was visibly shaking from emotions and stress on his last show on NBC and barely holding it together, so Norm came on and completely roasted him.
You can even tell from Conan's reaction after what Norm says at 1:30 that he almost loses it before finally laughing at the situation.

Started listening to the audio book yesterday and Norm's profound wisdom comes out in this paraphrase, "My friend is an alcoholic so he doesn't drink. I'm not an alcoholic so I do." This is the kind of thing I liked about Norm. I'm not sure if he came up with that or if it is something he "stole" but it is classic Norm.

Might've spit on my computer the first time that came up on youtube. Probably watched it live, but that was long enough ago for most of the weekend update clips to be "new" when I found them on the tubes.

His book Based on a True Story is really great. He even narrates it.
You know what would be cool? If all of his comic friends made his memoir into a movie and each take a turn playing Norm. Kind of like a funny Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. I'd pay money to see it and though it likely wouldn't make a nickel, I'd love for it to be made as a great and final tribute to the man.
Since he narrated the book, they could just use the same narration for the movie. That'd be a neat trick by golly.

The other day I watched his Hitler's Dog, Gossip & Trickery special on Netflix and straight laughed out loud for an hour.
