I annoyed my parents and neighbors day after day playing drums while listening to this album.

Video of 1991 Trees show when the security guard punches and kicks Kurt after he jumped in the crowd and hit the guard with his guitar, around 43:30

Forgot AiC. Definitely the one I appreciated the least.

So, when I was a kid, I really wanted a CD player for my birthday. My mom got me one, but didn't know what CD to get, so she went to the local record store and asked the kid behind the counter what to get. He gave her a CD and said, "Your kid probably doesn't know who this is yet, but trust me, he's going to love them. They are going to be the huge." When I opened my presents on my birthday, I was super excited about my new CD player, but I looked at the CD I got, and said, "Nirvana? Who the hell is Nirvana?" My mom immediately took me back to the record store so I could exchange the CD for something I wanted. About two weeks later, I was over at a friends house watching MTV and the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came on, and I immediately knew I made a huge mistake.

TLDR version: I could have been the cool kid at school who was all into Nirvana before anyone knew who they were. Instead, I was the kid who traded his Nirvana album for "Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch."

Cool article about the night before Nevermind came out. Including this cool clip of them playing a tiny club in Boston.

This was the stretch run of arguably the greatest 8 week period in rock history. Started on my 25th birthday Aug 12 1991:

  • August 12th - "Metallica" by Metallica (aka The Black Album)
  • August 27th - "Ten" by Pearl Jam
  • September 17th - "Use Your Illusion 1 & 2" by Guns N'Roses
  • September 24th - "Nevermind" by Nirvana
  • September 24th - "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" by Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • October 8th - "Badmotorfinger" by Soundgarden

Personally I had not been listening to radio for years cuz it all sucked - even AOR. These albums drew me back in to "new" rock music for the first time in a long while.

And considering 1991 as a whole year you also have these - it was a pretty good year and maybe the last great year of rock. I don't think it has been topped since anyway.

Ozzy - No More Tears
U2 - Achtung Baby
REM - Out of Time
Temple of the Dog - same
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers -- Into The Great Wide Open
VH - For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
Primus -- Sailing The Seas of Cheese
The Smashing Pumpkins -- Gish
Rush - Roll the Bones
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble -- The Sky is Crying
Dinosaur Jr. -- Green Mind
Blur - Leisure
The Pixies -- Trompe Le Monde
Neil Young - Weld (Live)
Primal Scream -- Screamadelica

This story is the exact same thing that happened to me. Mom did the same thing asking the store what to buy. Crazy eerie. The only thing I don't remember is if I traded it for Marky Mark or not. My first three CDs were that, Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer so it was one of those three. If your user name means you graduated in 2000 we are the same age so it kind of makes sense.

It was a big deal moving to CDs. My first two were Hammer's 2 Legit 2 Quit and Boyz II Men's Cooleyhighharmony.

I disagree. Those two albums had some great songs, but there was some crap as well. If the band took the top 10 or so songs from the two and made just one album, it's a top 10 album of the decade.

Of all time maybe.

Don't Cry
November Rain
Knockin on Heaven's Door
Civil War
You Could Be Mine
Live and Let Die

Those 6 alone are huge.

Any 4 of these 6 lesser known would complete one hell of an album.

Right Next Door to Hell = welcome to the jungle on steroids
Estranged = really their tour de force epic of this entire period from Appetite through UYI I an II
Coma = about bad drug trips from the experts Axl and Slash
Yesterdays = about what Axl was vs what he was now, some lynyrd-esque rolling piano
Breakdown = GNRs southern rock song complete with jammin piano and banjo
Pretty Tied Up = literally a warning of the excesses of R&R

Similarly the Beatles White album suffered from too much excess and filler and noise. Take the best 12 songs off that album and it might be the best Beatles album period.
