Finished this last night. Anyone else seen it?

This was a bit before my time (born in '82) but basically this guy allegedly raped, robbed and killed but was never convicted as he was diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. So the courts never really held him accountable; just shuffled him around different psychiatric hospitals.

He comes across as very manipulative and frankly by the end of it, it's hard not to see him as having worked the system and faking his illness or at least the degree of it.

EDIT to include trailer.

Haven't watched it yet, but dissociative identity disorder (DID), formerly multiple personality disorder, is an extremely controversial diagnosis. Most of my psychiatrist friends don't believe it is a real entity, but a cultural phenomena caused by the media and movies/TV that is utilized by people to manipulate others, or as a defense mechanism by feigning illness, or is brought on by a suggestion of the patient possibly having DID from the treating psychiatrist leading to the patient acting more like how they believe DID patients behave. The most common psychiatric comorbidity with DID tends to be borderline personality disorder, which is a personality disorder that is also commonly associated with factitious disorders (faking illness), as well. The also have higher rates of somatization disorders (physical symptoms caused by psychiatric disorders), like pseudoseizures, chronic pain without a clear etiology, conversion disorder, etc.

So yeah, without watching it, and knowing he was trying to beat a murder charge, I would say it is very likely that he was just being a manipulative little sh*t.

Watched it and found it very interestingly. I've been waiting on this thread to get started.

The doctor who treated him the most seemed all too willing to go along with the diagnosis as he seemed to like the accolades that came with being involved in the treatment.

I should clarify that there was never a murder charge. However, he was I believe the focus on an investigation of a missing person. Many people, including his own family, said that it seemed very plausible that he could have killed the person.

ETA: The rapes and robberies were confirmed through his own statements/testimony.

Whether the guy was faking the diagnosis or not to get out of legal issues, I always get so bothered by any story where a child is abused in any way. It makes me sick to my stomach thinking about what they have to go through and it makes me just want to hug my kids.

Have any of y'all read the book? I ran across a copy in the 6th grade and it was a really interesting read. Need to watch this.

I finished it last night and enjoyed it. I don't believe in that diagnosis either. It seemed like the woman "treating" him stood to gain a lot.

As soon as the last episode ended I watched Primal Fear.
