Bad choices in the remake

The tacked-on celebration shots on Naboo and Coruscant celebrating Rocky's win over Drago
Drago punches first
The CGI version of Sy Snoodles doing the duet with James Brown
Rocky punching the Wampa's arm off in Siberia

otherwise it was great.

My teenage son and I went because it's his favorite Rocky movie and it was a fun evening. The first 30 minutes was a live feed from Philadelphia with Sylvester Stallone being interviewed by the TCM host Ben whatever his last name is lol and that was neat. He said originally they almost had Bette Midler as Adrian! And then Cher and then Susan Sarandon but at the last second got Talia Shire. I never knew that. He also wished he wouldn't have killed Apollo but just had him permanently injured by Drago so he could have still been a mentor to Rocky.

As for the movie, there was a lot of new clips and dialogue and he cut out a lot of the humor and cheesiness from the 80's one and in his words "made it more serious like the other Rocky movies". It was cool but I still like the original better just because I'm used to it having seen and loved it 5000 times lol. But it was fun and if you get a chance to watch the directors cut once, do it.

I really missed the "do it now...NOW" before the last round from Duke

Yeah I missed some more Paulie lol and his kids cheering him on from home intercut with the music. I thought it was interesting he gave Drago a few more lines and actual humanity and the way the Soviet premieres all reacted after the fight was way more realistic.

I wish the symphonic version of Eye of the Tiger from the trailer would've made an appearance

Made the mistake of spending $4 to rent this because I didn't want to go to the TV upstairs to watch it free.

Huge mistake. It wasn't awful, but it was worse than the original and I just wish I hadn't seen it.

If you enjoyed the original and haven't watched this director cut yet, don't bother. I have no idea what was going through Stallone's head but I'm confident he was a bit punchy.

We get it, you were rooting for Drago.

Watching the BTS video helped me understand a lot of his logic with the cuts he made, especially during the fight, but it does make the fight come across differently.

It wasn't just the main fight. It was him preparing for the fight, the lead up to Apollo's fight, etc.

Even when Apollo was about to get killed, in the original Rocky holds the towel and it's clear he could have thrown it and saved him but he waited too long, which is really the main driver of his guilt-plot for the whole movie. But in this one Apollo is killed as he's picking up the towel. It was just a bad edit in my opinion.

I won't give any other details in case people want to watch it still, but I expected this to just be an expansion of the original with additional scenes and context, but instead there are some real, bad changes to the movie itself.

There's a really fascinating BTS video of how he went through it and some of the decisions he made, it's 90 minutes long but is really interesting, particularly for anyone who makes or loves movies:

I'll wait for the extended director's cut behind the scenes video.
