This reeks of that terrible Wizard of Oz prequel with James Franco. That, and I will never understand what people find endearing about the Willy Wonka character/world to begin with, even with Wilder in the role. The character comes across as a truly psychotic boss, gives off serious pedophile vibes, and the whole thing just gives me the willies.
I'm actually with you. When I was a kid, that movie terrified me. I legitimately thought it was a horror movie. My dad used to tease me that he'd send me to Willie Wonka's factory when I didn't want to do something he asked me to do. That was when I was maybe 5 or 6 years old. I didn't realize people didn't consider it a scary movie until I was a bit older.

Super Unpopular opinion....

I like Gene Wilder, but I prefer the Johnny Depp Wonka movie.

Johnny Depp version was an abomination

I grew up watching the Gene Wilder version. I always liked it. He struck the perfect balance of odd and funny (while trying not to be funny). Never had any thoughts of him preying on the children or trying to murder them. It was the selfish nature of the children that put themselves in danger, not Wonka. The boat scene is obviously very "WTF?" with the rest of the film, but overall I still enjoy watching it to this day. Even with the whole "You stole fizzy lifting drinks!! Good day!!" to "Charlie, you won!! Give me a hug!!" scene. And Grandpa Joe miraculously being able to dance and sing after being in that bed all those years.

The Johnny Depp version gave me more of the 'Michael Jackson' vibe for sure. Even Gene Wilder criticized the vibe of that film.

Great movie, great music, only came across as "weird" if you let it or if you see things like "pedo" in everything.

I had the soundtrack on vinyl (still do) and wore it out. I've seen it a million times, and if it is on right now, I would watch it again.

Burton / Depp version, on the other hand, wanted to creep you out. I've seen it once and that was enough.
