And now, just hours before the premiere, the reviews finally hit. I was afraid of this…

Sounds more disappointing than anything. Sucks, cuz this one sentence pitch from the THR review sounds pretty awesome:

Quote:

Structurally, Invasion is something like Independence Day meets Babel.

At best it sounds like something that might be fine for a binge, but may not get a renewal anyway.

Ah, you're most likely just hoping that..

Fascinating response however, greatly appreciated data point.

Watching episode 2 right now. This series has been SLOW so far. I'm wanting to like it, but it's been a challenge.

Finished episode 2 which did pick up a bit. Will start 3 this morning shortly. Agree it's been a very slow start. Still intrigued where it goes

They could have consolidated the first 2 episodes easily. That doesn't bode well for the rest.

5 episodes deep, I want to like this show, but it's just getting annoying in all honesty. None of the characters arcs so far is all that compelling. Everything is just superficial. They could take any one of them and make the show about them and make it deeper and it would make for a better experience. They're trying to do too much, but none of it very well. It feels like the show doesn't know where it's going in all honesty. I'll keep watching because I'm interested enough to want to see what happens, but begrudgingly.

You're in for a treat then.

This is a pretty hilarious synopsis of a review from the Hollywood Reporter that echoes yours:

Quote:

Daniel Fienberg, writing for The Hollywood Reporter, said that "Invasion verges on 10 episodes of setup so pure and unfulfilling that a better title would be Evasion". He called the series, "amusing at first, then annoying, and finally, simply confusing", but praised Sam Neill's performance.

But nobody sat in a writers room saying, "How can we make this a puzzle in which none of the pieces fit together in the slightest?"

This is spot on. I will also agree that Sam Neil is the best thing on the show, he's great.

The problem with alien invasion movies is that they are all wildly unrealistic. If an alien species was able to travel here and invade us, then they would also wipe us out like humans wiping out an ant hill. But that is not an enjoyable watch. So they have to have the ant hill win somehow and there is no way to do that without forcing the viewer to have a stroke trying to sufficiently suspend disbelief.

Three episodes in and this has to be one of the blandest, most baffling shows I've ever seen. How can a series about an alien invasion be such a snore-fest? Who thought this glacial approach was a good idea? It would be one thing if any of these characters were remotely interesting, but they're just not.

To that end, it's desperately missing a character/plot-line embedded in whatever tip-of-the-spear government intelligence operation is attempting to understand what, exactly, is going on. I get that the filmmakers are intentionally trying to keep us as uninformed as the characters themselves, and are instead attempting to underline the "humanity" of it all, but the lack of context only exacerbates the boredom and frustration. Especially for a multi-plot-line story told on a global scale. You simply can't ping around the globe, during a world-wide alien invasion, and not only keep the aliens completely hidden for three+ hours, but keep the official government attempt to track and understand the invasion hidden as well. It's insane.

Beyond that, so far it has no theme and absolutely nothing interesting to say. It's just a generic, soulless "invasion" series with no where to be and seemingly no point in even existing.

The "tip of the spear" to me only feels necessary because the other stories aren't interconnected. If they were each playing a role in really illustrating the world, and you bought into their story, I wouldn't miss it. But the sad thing is if that were a part of this show it would be a bunch of poorly written expositional nothing. The best point of reference I would use is a zombie show, like The Walking Dead. You bought into the characters and their story. What was going on with the government/military really didn't matter.

If they wanted to do the best show possible they would have made season 1 about one particular character/setting and start building the world from that one point outward. Sam Neil's character and setting to me would be the best one for doing that. You have a compelling point of view in a small setting, that's your starting point.

This feels like a poorly written version of the book World War Z. Each chapter was from the standpoint of a different person and their part of the world.

I haven't seen this show at all. So I'm not commenting on it.. but

What I think would be interesting is an alien invasion movie where they only want to eliminate humans and not really touch much of anything else. It makes no sense for an alien species to turn Earth into a barren wasteland when there are plenty of Earth climate wastelands all over the place for them to settle if that's what they wanted.

So the premise would be that they want Earth, want to extinct us because we are a threat, but want to keep the rest of the plants and animals intact. It would also be more interesting if they didn't have the power to have a big disk hover like in most movies. But they have to follow the rules of orbiting like the rest of us. In that paradigm, I think they would have to have things come down here and kill us. Sorta like these dog things in black mirror (without the USB connection ability). Maybe not exactly like that since it shouldn't be stealing the idea, but some sort of robotic killer machine that we have to hold at bay, while trying to send rockets up to space to take out their ship and stuff.

In the middle of episode four.

Four hours in.

A massive, coordinated "attack" is apparently occurring all over the globe. Yet not one scene, character, or newsfeed - in the entire run of the show so far - has shown or described a single one of these "attacks," save for the brief, bottled encounter in Afghanistan. A space station has even exploded. And yet, everyone still thinks this is some kind of terrestrial terrorist attack, and aliens haven't been mentioned once.

What - the hell - is going on???

Where is the Muslim family running? Why are they even running at all? How have we not been given these basic bits of information? Their house was fine! Why is the motel area being evacuated? What damage is being caused to cause all this alarm? How can a show about an alien invasion be even remotely vague on this stuff?

Also, the actor playing the American soldier has one, generic gear, and his character sucks.

That, and I laugh every time I see "JASA" on screen. Is "JASA" a real thing? It can't be.

Anyway, back to the train wreck, from which I can't look away…

I had the same reaction. Japan's version of NASA is actually JAXA. My guess is JAXA wouldn't let them use their logo so they went with JASA.

I kinda want to see it based on how bad everyone's reviews are. I'm curious, but not quite enough to take the plunge.

Yeah, it's not at all fun bad, it's just bad bad. Actually, it's not so much bad as it is boring as hell. It's technically "well made," but the most bland, monotonous, generic version of this story possible. That, and there's not a single character with even an ounce of charm. Everyone is just so dour and depressed. For a show with the tagline "hold on to your humanity," there's very little of it on display. It desperately needs a Han Solo type to crack a joke every now and then.

It's somewhat concerning that I still haven't seen a single commercial, reaction, review, or even casual tweet about this show, yet it debuts in just three days. For something that looks so massive, and like such an event, I'm baffled as to the lack of buzz of any kind, good or bad. I'm hopeful, though. We'll find out soon enough...

What was the last good alien invasion show? Heck, what were some previous alien invasion shows?

- There was that one on TNT with a guy from E.R., I watched maybe two seasons before I bowed out.

- There was that V reboot that was canceled kinda early (I think).

- There was one with Sawyer from Lost. Was that any good?

- X-Files had some good alien invasion plots.

Five hours in and I've realized I don't know a single character's name. Not one. That's how "memorable" these people are.

That said, at least the JASA plot line finally got interesting? At last, someone on this show has a clear-cut goal/mission, one that directly relates to the alien mystery. As opposed to everyone else wandering aimlessly with only vague motivations of returning/leaving "home."

Oh, and speaking of aliens… finally, with 10 minutes left in episode five - the halfway point of the season - someone actually said the word "alien"! A miracle!

So a quick Google search tells me that Episode 6 was only 33 minutes long, and there is a Home Invasion (name of the episode) by an alien.

Did you get to see what they look like?

Finally, an episode with an actual alien! And a pretty good episode at that! One with a tense, taut plot for a change that directly relates to the invasion itself. This should have been the second episode of the season, btw. The alien should have instead attacked their house in New Jersey in much the same fashion, they hide in the attic, etc, and then they'd actually have a reason to run, there wouldn't be so much needless obfuscation for five hours, etc.

That said, I'm of two minds about the alien itself. On one hand, I'm glad we finally saw one, that characters interacted with it, and that it's a relatively unique design. The way it interacts with and seems to be in-part made up of sound frequencies or whatever is pretty cool. That's something new! But on the other hand, as I've said multiple times on this board for over a decade now, I'm soooooooooo sick of mindless, roaring, animalistic, human-eating aliens in movies. It just doesn't make sense that something so primal and slobbery and monster-like is capable of interstellar travel, inventing such advanced tech, etc. In this case, I'm really hoping the aliens we've seen so far are more like an advance team of alien "animals" or whatever sent ahead to ravage everything and everyone, and that the aliens themselves are much more intelligent-seeming/looking.

Anyway, overall, it's still not a good show, but this was at least a step in the right direction, and for the first time my interest has actually been piqued...

Now that's a fun episode of television. And all from one character's perspective, they finally put it together. I almost gave up, that was great.
