Have read some of the thread on this board.

1. Should I watch the original before the 2021 version? Have never seen the original by David Lynch.

2. Would you recommend for an 11 year old girl? Wondering if it would be good to watch with my daughter.

Thanks.

No, you don't need to watch the original. I love it but it's completely unnecessary and irrelevant to watching the new one.

Fine for a kid I think. No sex or bloody violence that I can think of.

The Lynch movie is the entire first book, so if you care about spoilers for the book or the second DV movie, don't watch it. The Lynch movie does have it's moments, it has some campy goodness, but overall it's kind of a mess.

I'd take my 10 year old daughter if she wanted to go. Some war violence, nothing too graphic and some creepy bad guys.

1984 Dune is only good if you saw it IN 1984.

Most likely, it is intense at times, but no graphic violence or sex.

Thanks.

As others have said, don't bother watching the 1984 version. It actually has some seemingly important parts that aren't actually in the book. It might leave you scratching your head, wondering why that's not in the new movie.

Then there are some scenes that are too similar in both movies, and may seem seem like Villanueva just copied from the first movie, when the truth is that both movies lift those straight from the book.

Should be okay for you daughter. I am planning to take my 13yo daughter to see it.

I'm going to disagree. One of the many aspects of the original that I appreciate is that it was able to tell a good story in an effective way on a low budget. Low budget excellence is a lost art.

Its good if you are familiar with the source material. Otherwise you are so lost and lack appreciation of what Lynch was including from the books. Some could say he tried to put too much into it without explanation to the uninformed which weighted it down.

That is true for the 2 1/2 theatrical cut. the 4 + hour extended cut gives you most all the answers. It still has weirding modules though.

Not sure I would call $40mm in 1984 "low budget".

Does any streaming service have the mini-series from 20 years ago?

With just inflation, $40 million in 1984 is $101 million in 2020. The 2021 movie's budget is $165 million.

For reference Return of the Jedi had the same or smaller budget (32-41mm)
