This could be really great, just not sure how it is anything other than a two hour snuff film.

Has DiCaprio ever not played a sympathetic character? I'd feel dirty coming out of a movie feeling bad for Jim Jones. I hope he plays him like the villain he really was.

I don't know about anyone else but I didn't feel much sympathy for Calvin Candie or Jordan Belfort.

Good point. I forgot about DJango Unchained. However, I was thinking when DiCaprio was the main character. DJango is obviously the main character in that movie who everybody sympathizes with.

In the Wolf of Wall street, I do think most viewers sorta root for Belfort in that movie. Even though he is a slime ball.

In fact, I'm trying to think of a movie where there is one clear protagonist and he is a person the audience hates. Off the top of my head I can't think of one. Goodfellas, Godfather, etc. are full of bad people, but we still root for the protagonist. The best I can think of now is Downfall (the movie about the fall of Hitler), but there were like 5 main characters in that (but none of them were sympathetic). I imagine there will be 10 responses of movies I forget about. Surely I'm wrong on this sudden observation.

He's going to be awesome in this.

Kinda surprising Jonestown hasn't had a major motion picture about it done til now.

People think Bellfort is funny in that film… but no sane person rooted for Jordan Bellfort in Wolf of Wall Street

Rooting was the wrong word. I mean we didn't actively hate his character watching that movie as we would have in real life.

Somehow, watching him go from unemployed to hitting it "big" made him more sympathetic than he really was. Sorta like Walter White was more sympathetic than if we had simply skipped the first 3 seasons.

It'll be interesting to see if it goes farther back than Jonestown and explores his socialism.

I thought HBO was working on a Jonestown series a couple of years ago. Wonder what happened with that?

If you read the history of Jim Jones, you can see how an engaging movie can be made out of it.

He run up to the mass suicide is a fascinating story.

Long time ago, Powers Boothe played Jim Jones in a film on this subject.

Trivia - the Air Force sent C-141s down to bring back the remains of the victims - knew one of the crew members.

Yeah I watched a documentary on him at some point, his life is fascinating. But from the time the congressional party got there until the end, it's a pretty dismal scene.

That made for tv movie ****ed with my elementary school aged mind. So much so, that I only imagine him as Jim Jones. No matter the movie, he was always Jim jones

That film had a pretty impressive cast. TV had some good material 40+ years ago.

Powers Boothe was also very good in By Dawn's Early Light, a decade later. Rebecca DeMorney was the best looking AF pilot I ever saw ;-)

James Earl Jones was in both films, coincidentally.

The article mentions he's in another upcoming Scorsese movie. Is Scorsese capable of making a movie without Leonardo in it?
