Also got to shout out Henry Winkler for Barry.

That is a great one. He was so typecated he couldn't get work for a long time.

It's RDJ for me.

October 2005 was a huge month for him. He went from movie purgatory / Ally McBeal appearances to not only starring in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (one of my absolute favorites as well), but having a supporting role in the critically acclaimed, George Clooney-directed Good Night, and Good Luck just two weeks before. It was that one-two punch that sent him on his way, and then, just six months later (March 2006), he had a great supporting role in Zodiac, another one of my all-time favorites, that solidified his comeback. A year later (May 2008) Iron Man hit and the rest is history.

I don't think any other comeback comes even close to that kind of run, in less than three years, from indie/drama darling to blockbuster superstar, after crashing and burning a decade+ prior.
Everyone knows it was his role in U.S. Marshals that put him back on the map

Henry Winkler for Arrested Development would be the right choice.

He also created a children's book series about a boy named Hank Zipzer. Hank is the world's greatest underachiever. And he is based on Henry Winkler's childhood

Was turned into a British kids' sitcom. Henry Winkler played Mr. Rock. The very cool music teacher.

Matthew McConaughey

Completely lost to romantic comedy abyss. Now everything he touches is gold. Lincoln Lawyer, Dallas Buyers Club, True Detective, Mud, etc etc etc

I know he's a sip, but he completely turned around his career.

I don't know, last good movie he made was Interstellar. Now he's just speaking slowly in Lincoln commercials and he's always alone, makes me sad.

Not as big as some listed on here but Drew Barrymore went from washed up child actor, then got the intro to Scream, which somehow got her in with Sandler / Fallon and their movies which turned around her whole persona.

Can't believe we are mid down page 2 and I'm about to win the thread.

Although I hated the movie his first comeback was in and partially because of his performance, the answer to this thread is Daniel Day-Lewis.

Rob Lowe. Amazing brat pack success, then sex scandal and he is a laughing stock, pause, then pivots unironically to Tommy Boy, Austin Powers and finally kills it in Parks and Rec and he is aging like fine wine.

The Grinder is the funniest thing he has done - imho - funnier than P&R. Criminally underrated.

Or maybe I just didn't pay attention to what feels like a 30 year gap and his 20 movies of the past decade.

Danny Trejo.

Came back from a bad childhood of crime and violence and completely changed his life and the lives of many others.

And he keeps working to make up for the damage he did early in his life.

Kiefer Sutherland in the early 2000s. Mid 80s to mid 90s he was either brat pack and/or the evil guy in every movie.

Then he seemed to sort of disappear for a while.

Then 24 turned him into a total badass and a megastar. Think he was the highest paid TV actor for a while.

Not sure what he's doing these days...think mostly focusing on his music.

Didn't he just have another show on TV?

I know he did Designated Survivor a few years ago that was a moderate success but ultimately cancelled after 3-4 seasons. Just googled him and sounds like he does have a new espionage TV series on the horizon with Paramount. Maybe it'll be comeback #2.

That's really not a comeback but we all have different opinions.

Comebacks to me are people who can't even get a job, not ones that just aren't in big movies/tv anymore.

OK. But he had a good stretch of being out of the public eye for years to becoming the biggest TV action star on the planet. Other than supporting typecast bad guy parts in A Few Good Men/A Time to Kill, I can't really even think of many significant roles for much of the 90s until 24 came out. Seems like a bigger valley between two career peaks than some of the other submissions.

But yeah, I don't think he was ever ostracized in Hollywood and his career path post-24 is probably mostly by his choice.

Jackie Earl Haley
He was a child actor, was in the Bad News Bears movies, in a film with Cruise and Shelly Long called Losin' It, and in the great movie Breaking Away. He even reprised his role in the TV show. Then nothing. It's hard wen you're 5' nothing and ugly. He moved to SA, had a production company, was in a band.
He got a break in 2008, and a role in a Sean Penn Film All the King's men, then got nominated for an Oscar for Little Chidren. Has worked nonstop since and still lives in SA.
Little Children was, of course, an extremely difficult film and role to watch. But...wow.

Breaking Away is greatness.
