Most of our ideas come from Greek plays. You find elements in most stories from Ancient Greece or Shakespeare. I have no idea whether this idea of the grumpy pessimist and the dumb optimist can be traced back to these. Is there nothing new under the sun? Or didn't the creator of this trope develop something new? We see it all the time now.
