I love the Charlie Brown Christmas album. We listen to it a lot around our house during Christmas time, not just because it's fun and Christmas-y, but also because I think it's good music in its own right. I guess people who detest jazz might not like it, but I think it's great.

After that, most Christmas music just seems to be slight variations and rearrangements on the same old nostalgic standards. Not that there's anything wrong with that, and that stuff is fun to listen to for a while, but there's only so much of that I can handle before it gets old.

Any recs for not-cliche Christmas music?

I like the Kenny Chesny Christmas album. If you like country it's pretty good.

Kemper Crabb's Medieval Christmas arrangements are spot on. I've seen him perform live around Houston several times. Amazing work.

What?!

Classic Christmas music is fantastic and is the best. Give me Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, etc.

I have not heard an original Christmas song released in the last 30 years that I actually want to listen to.

Sufjan Stevens Songs for Christmas is pretty good if you're into his more low-fi stuff. Some misses in there but also some really beautiful arrangements

The sports station in Dallas has a guy that does a holiday music show which they broadcast/stream live every Christmas Eve. He plays all kinds R&B, rock, punk, country, etc. Its a real eclectic mix and I've usually never heard most of them before. Below is a link to the 2019 show. I hate most (all) Christmas music but I really like to listen to his show each year.

The Doctor Demento Christmas album is a must.

And TSO has a lot of great songs on their first couple of Christmas albums. It started with the Dead Winter Dead album when they were still Savatage

Depends on what kind of music you like. Also, relatively speaking, new Christmas songs from the 60's and 70's could be considered "old nostalgic standards".

Here are some "new" Christmas songs that I would say are good, don't sound like "traditional" standards, and still represent Christmas.

1960/1978 - Please Come Home for Christmas - Charles Brown (made more popular by Eagles) - Blues

1967 - What Christmas Means to Me - Stevie Wonder - awesome groove

1963 - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Darlene Love - great original era Rock song even without the Christmas lyrics - Phil Spector produced so no wonder I like it.

1994 - Merry Christmas from the Family - REK - real country, not pop country

After those I would venture to put McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime and Lennon's Happy Xmas on there as good originals that are newer. My only reserve there is that both overuse the sleigh bells, which adds to your point of being more so variations on traditional Christmas songs even though they are original.

An oddity is Pretty Paper by Willie. The original popular version by Roy Orbison in 1963 has to many traditional Christmas musical elements (strings, bells, choirs). The 1979 version that Willie did with just the guitar is way better.

Charlie Brown Christmas is #1. Also, I love the music from Rudolph and though it's overplayed as Hell, Trans Siberian Orchestra.

If you like new age-y instrumentals, Narada has a bunch of good ones.
I'm partial to the one they released in 1988. It isn't Christmas until we've played that one.
