The fact that he lived in a stairwell for years was great.
His reasoning was actually kind of true though. He loved solo for the love of nature, being out by himself and excitement. Had a camera crew been there, he wouldn't be by himself and in his eyes it would ruin the moment. He wasn't against the movie seeing as how he said he'd agree to climb it again for the movie, but he wasn't going to ruin that first solo.
