Couple of quick factoids...

- The original title, throughout production, was Showtime, which is much, much better, IMO. But HBO understandably didn't want to give one of their series the same title as their rival network.

- When Will Ferrell and Adam McKay were producing partners, Ferrell was originally cast as Jerry Buss, but McKay, who directed the pilot, then replaced him with John C. Reilly without first informing Ferrell. McKay had already been making more serious fare - or, rather, not outright comedies - for a while, but this is the straw that finally broke the camel's back, and led to Ferrell and McKay breaking up their incredibly successful partnership/production company. The two haven't spoken since. McKay admits it was sh*t move on his part, and has since tried to reach out to Ferrell, but Ferrell still won't speak to him apparently. That McKay replaced Ferrell with Reilly, of all people, needless to say we won't be getting a Step Brothers sequel any time soon (which McKay also directed). That said, based on the trailer alone, I think Reilly is a way better fit in the role. McKay definitely should have handled the situation better, though.

It makes me sad for Ferrell and McKay to break up, they've been responsible for so much laughter for me over the last 20+ years. Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, The Other Guys all bring me happiness as well as their time on SNL.

When I read about all that it's pretty clear they're both to blame here. McKay probably made the right decision casting wise, but was it worth losing one of his best friends and his business partner? Same goes for Ferrell, was this one role enough to throw away such a significant relationship in his life? Maybe this will be one of those stories like when Bill Murray finally went to see Harold Ramis on his death bed to clear the air. These two guys are going to miss each other. But what I read into this as well was these two have been growing apart for a while, they have very different ideas about the kind of projects they want to work on, this was perhaps the last straw.

Every time I see anything about Magic, who I will maintain until my dying day is the 2nd best player of all-time behind MJ, I have to repeat my favorite bit of NBA trivia.

In a 4-year span, Magic won a high school championship (1977), an NCAA championship (1979), and an NBA championship (1980).

Looks like a must-watch.

Slight correction... apparently Ferrell was never officially cast, he just really wanted the role, and McKay may or may not have said it's his. Then Michael Shannon was cast as Buss, but ultimately didn't work out, so McKay landed on Reilly. Somewhere in all of that, there was either a miscommunication of some kind, or intentional snubbing, and either way Ferrell and McKay broke up because of it. But yeah, as Max Power said above, they're likely both to blame, for various reasons (though again, McKay has admitted he should have handled the situation better and is still trying to reach out to Ferrell to reconcile).

Looking at the IMDB page.

I guess they created this guy in a lab to play Larry Bird (all 10 episodes)



Mike Epps (Black Doug) is in 6 episodes as Richard Pryor

This fine lady as Paul Abdul in 6 episodes



This guy from Agents of SHIELD as Jack Nicholson



Some guy I've never heard of as David Stern

This lady as Debbie Allen from Fame, and damn.



Current Sacramento King Terrence Davis as Adrian Dantley of all people

Says Adrien Brody is only in it as at Riley for 2 episodes which doesn't make much sense since the was already on the staff in the late 70s.

Michael Chiklis as Red Auerbach, which is amazing and hilarious.

Solomon Hughes who plays Kareem was a Globetrotter and is 6-11 so good casting there.

And in the ultimate WTF moment for me - Norm Nixon's real-life son DeVaughn is playing Norm Nixon. However the son was also Danny Dyson, son of Miles, in Terminator 2. WHAT?

Also there's the role of Donald Sterling in a couple of episodes. That should be fun.
