I'm not a die hard musical fan, but a have enjoyed a few over the last several years. And the new West side story by Spielberg was definitely one I enjoyed.

I'm not sure there was anything I didn't like about it. The acting, singing, dancing was all great. The cast selection I thought was perfect. And the sets were like going back in time.

I think if musicals are something you even like just a little then this is a must see.

Lots of eye rolling with one character that stuck out like a soar thumb and had no business in the story line. Besides that, I thought it was well done.

Indeed. It was very much a "here, look at me. I'm transgender and if you don't accept me, you're just as bad as the Jets and the Sharks".

Just wasn't necessary and it was very much forced into what was an otherwise good movie.

I hear they didn't subtitle the Spanish speaking parts so that's a pass for me. If you are going to be woke and not allow others to partake in the story then I won't waste my money on the result. I'll stick with the OG film.

I was okay with it. When they wanted you to know what they were saying, they would figure out how to get someone to say "In English, Please" or whatever.

Why would I want to watch a remake when the original was so good? If Hollywood wants to remake movies, take something awful and make it great.

I haven't seen it.
But Anybodys kinda didn't feel female. Not saying she was trans. But she wasn't girly.

She was a Jet.
And the Jets were men.

That is where the confusion may come.

She tells them she won't wear skirts because of her knees.

And when she was told to be a girl and beat it by Tony, she was done.

I don't think doing a trans reveal in this was necessary, but people didn't get who Anybodys was, paid very little attention to the movie.

I really liked the actor who played Riff. He was great and Reminded me of a young Steve Buscemi. Hope to see more of him.

The original Anybodys was a Tomboy. That's a far cry from a transgender.

I obviously love Spielberg, but I just have zero desire to see this in theaters. I can't fathom who it's possibly for, but I guess you don't say no to Spielberg wanting to remake his favorite movie of all time. Between this, In the Heights, and Dear Evan Hansen all bombing in the past six months, though, I just don't think people want musicals anymore. Or at least these kinds of musicals.

I really enjoyed La La Land. As much as I thumb my nose to they crowd, I thought it was perfect.

Le Miserables? Nah. The vocals just don't stand up to broadway.

The original WSS was perfect for what it was. Why remake it? Besides changing Stay Cool to a different scene, it was exactly the original, but with more grit. Hardly justifies it's existence even though I thought it was well done.

I think there's a place for musicals when done right.

Absolutely loved La La Land as well, and have watched it multiple times since seeing it in the theater. What it had going for it, besides simply being a great movie, was a movie star cast and the fact that it was an *original* musical. It wasn't an adaptation of a play or some old movie. It felt new and fresh and like something you had to experience in the theater.

Was in an actual theater about a month ago and saw a trailer for the movie Cyrano! that is set to star Peter Dinklage. I was excited at the beginning of the trailer but the longer it went on the worse of a feeling I got about its chance of success.

I absolutely love musicals and have no desire to see this. Agree on the "who wants to see this" thing with this one.

I caught this on Disney+ the other night. I agree that I'm not sure why this movie exists or who wanted or needed a West Wide Story remake.
However, this movie is an absolute masterclass by Spielberg in colors, lighting, shadow, framing a shot, and camera movement. I was have theories about the colors of costumes and how Maria's costume colors change from virgin white to Hispanic reds and yellows then to Yankee blues. The lighting in particular stood out to me so many times in this movie, and that's not something I usually notice in movies.
The Mambo dance at the the gym and Maria song on the fire escape really blew me away.
I agree the un-subtitled Spanish at times was annoying. But the movie is shot so well that I think I could watch it with no dialog and follow what is being said.
Overall not a great movie musical to watch and enjoy, but if you want to watch one of the greatest directors ever absolutely flex and show off the entire time, then check it out and nerd out at the movie making.

Finally watched this a couple months back, and while it only confirmed my "Who is this for and why does it exist?" take - really, I felt zero emotion for the characters/story - it truly is one of the most visually breathtaking movies I've ever seen. Every last shot is stunning, and is Spielberg/Kaminski at the absolute height of their powers.
