The next contract battle begins. Just got the an email from YTTV stating that if they can't come to an agreement with Disney that their content will be yanked from the tv lineup starting this Friday. Is this going to happen every time YTTV has a provider contract up for renewal?

It's getting tiresome.

I get your point, but this one would actually sting. The last two rounds didn't move the needle. Here you lose ABC, ESPN (SEC Network) and whatever Disney channels they carry (that I don't watch). It would be time to move to something like Hulu Live or one of the others.

Hmmmm. The NBC one I didn't care about. But the only reason I have YouTube TV is for live sports. i don't see YTTV winning this one.

I'd definitely move to a different platform immediately

YTTV needs to dump the bloat that they've added over the past few years - including the fee increase for channels that few wanted - and make sure they keep sports fans happy.

Sports fans will jump ship in a matter of hours, if not minutes, if the sports content is lost.

I just got the same email. So what's the next best streaming service?

Good question. Any of the others have an Android app with a floating window or split-screen support? Would like this for mobile viewing.

Both sides lose if they cannot reach a deal
This is beyond annoying

That's already happening.

They expanded their offering and upped the cost. Now they can't close on negotiations with providers.

.

Yep. Im leaving the moment the sports channels leave if that's what happens with Disney.

We had dropped cable several years back thinking cutting the cord would save us money. Initially, it did - but the streaming services couldn't handle the big games on ESPN and would buffer quite a bit.

We went back to cable with one box for the main TV, and with Xfinity's app, we can stream TV in the other rooms. The cost is the same, if not a little cheaper.

It was always going to move this way. It's unfortunate, but the same thing happened when the cell carriers dropped unlimited and now they're brining it "back" at way more than their limited data lines.

Yea, I essentialy just have it specifically to watch sports, and Im already annoyed that they dont have FSSW.

Someone should just negotiate and then provide a service that just has all the main sports.

So negotiate with bally for regional sports, get Disney for ESPN channels, Fox for FS1 and FS2, then the assumption is youd also get fox, abc, cbs, nbc with all of that

I dont need the other 40 channels Im forced to pay for.

Most of the cable companies are pushing towards streaming as well.

If I get Disney+ does that come with access to live ESPN, ABC, etc? If not how do I go about getting those assuming no deal is reached and I drop YTTV? Do I have to get ESPN+?

You would have to pay for another cable service, as far as I can tell

If you want live sports like ESPN you'll need something like Fubotv or Hulu live. Both are in the $65 per month range.

The $15 Disney Hulu ESPN+ package doesn't include the main sports channels like ESPN ESPN2 or SECN.

Disney recognizes this hence why the package of ESPN channels costs each cable company roughly $9 per subscriber. With cord cutting taking a huge chunk of ESPN's revenue off the books, they can either accept that they will continue less subscriber income or jack up the rate to cable/streaming package providers. With people now paying just monthly on YTTV rather than being locked in to a year long deal that was typical with cable companies, YTTV has the risk of people canceling immediately should they lose access to ESPN. Then if they do give in to ESPN's new higher price, they will pass that cost on to the subscriber with higher monthly rates and rather than ESPN getting the heat, YTTV will get the blame for jacking up the cost yet again.

Its the same old song and dance that has been going on for decades now, just this time ESPN/Disney needs significantly more than in the past as less people are subsidizing sports fans' viewing habits

I just ignored that email because I wasn't worried about losing Disney channels but I did not consider the impact with sports networks.

Ugh.

My post from the premium thread about this topic:

Does anyone have DirecTV Stream? It's more expensive than most streaming services, but it has an option for unlimited DVR like YTTV and has the regional sports networks. Was already thinking about switching and this Disney thing might be the last little push.

They do have a website link in the email that lists the channels - but you're correct - they're conveniently missing from the main email.

This is turning into a huge problem with mega-corps like Disney. They have SO much power they can hold providers over a barrel and force them to pay whatever they want.

Maybe some anti-trust issues in the future but I'm a doctor not a lawyer dammit.

I don't know why Disney doesn't just expand their streaming and handle it themselves. Cut out the middle man.
Keegan99

Because then every provider would axe Disney. And all those grandmas and hipsters that pay monthly for the ESPN bundle but don't care about sports would no longer be adding revenue.

Plus, the leagues want their product spread far and wide. The SEC wouldn't be too happy if fans needed a special Disney subscription to watch league games, while the B1G would still get their contests on cable.

I currently have Direct TV Stream. I was originally AT&TTv when i got it when suddenlink pissed me off for the last time. The first year of the contract was discounted but jumped after the first year which i was told up front so i was ok with it. After looking at Hulu Live it would save me some money since i already pay for the 15$ Hulu plan just up that to Hulu live and drop direct tv. Go from 125 / month plus 15 with hulu, to about 75 / month for just hulu. I just have to wait until the 2 year contract that i signed expires next June.

I have to laugh at this, not because I disagree about Disney, but because the statement is made when they're battling against Google, a company that is over 8x larger in Market Capitalization and doubles their yearly revenue.
