The 1976 hit "Shannon" by Henry Gross was about a dog, the Samoyed owned by the Beach Boys' Carl Wilson.

Gross was visiting Wilson and learned that Wilson's dog Shannon had recently been killed by a car. Gross wrote the song in the dog's memory and it was a Top 10 hit for him.

This one hits close to home. Got a black lab that is now 14 and barely getting around. Song describes her well. And it just so happens her name is Maggie. My FIL played me the song one night in his truck a few months ago, and I nearly lost it.
