First one that comes to my mind is "Summer Nights" by Van Halen. Though I realize they're on the periphery of the hair metal label.

Van Halen transcended hair metal. Their sound was unique and they never wore makeup.

Facelift doesn't get the love it should. Damn, that album was filthy. They were a key point (for me) from hair metal/metal to grunge.

Went from pop/rock (especially 80s rock) like this for me...

1988 - Living Colour's Vivid
1989 - Soundgarden's Louder than Love
1990 - AiC's Facelift

My god what a great time to be 15 with nothing to do but listen to music and learn to play guitar with friends.

In April '92 PJ opend for Soundgarden at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas. You could still purchase tickets at the door i.e. their popularity hadn't exploded yet.

My buddies parents drove us because I was barely 16 and there was no way in hell my parents or any parents were going to loan us small town boys a vehicle to drive to a concert in Dallas.

We unfortunately could only afford general admission, which was on the landing behind the last row. We were the 1st people through the doors because the door person said "If you already have tickets, line up on the right. If you have will call or are buying tickets, line up on the left". The 3 of us were the only persons in the right line for a while. As we stood there we listened to PJ doign soundcheck to "Once", echoing out of the walls of the building into the parking.

Monster Magnet opened. Still the worst band I've ever seen perform live.

This makes me sad for you. They're low-key one of my favorite bands and I think Dave Wyndorf is a genius but he's also a pill head and my experiences seeing them have ranged from transcendent to absolute garbage which I suppose is about right for a stoner/doom metal band.

Very possible I caught them on a bad night, but they were hot garbage during this show. Granted I was 16 and my tastes have changed so maybe I'd like it better now (or some period in b/w then and now) but they were awful.

Rest of the show was great as expected. PJ was badass but the the 3 of us (15 and 16 years old) left saying "holy hell Cornell is my god!"

Another side note - I remember taking a leak in the bathroom and hearing Jeremy playing. I thought "I remember this song, not a bad song."

I'd only bought the PJ cassette a week before the show so it didn't have many cycles yet in my ears.

When you put it that way, seeing PJ and Soundgarden at that time...yeah its ok if the opener whiffs.

Saw the next one in the unicorn ballroom in Houston. Had no idea where it was so we left extra early from CS with my roommate. Of course we went right to it - was about to leave when we saw tour bus pull around to the back. Got to talk to PJ for about 30 min. We knew who they were and were really hyped to talk to them. Sound garden showed up later and we did talk to Kim Thayal(?) a bit. MTV showed up and we're interviewing the band out back while we were standing there.

Great show. Still have a pick Jeff Amment threw into crowd. Closed it out with Temple of the Dog.

Few years later at rock and roll hall of fame, saw poster of that very night at Unicorn ballroom. If you search YouTube, full video is there.
