How have they not solved the issue on their app where it won't let you play downloaded videos without an internet connection?

On a plane and can't watch my ****ing succession downloads

I just tried watching one of my downloaded shows with my phone in airplane mode and had no issues watching it offline.

Maybe try going to settings - video options and turn off stream over wifi only.

The app on my TVs can be real glitchy and prone to crashing. Drives me nuts.

HBO Go was great. I loved the lay out and user interface. Max is the total opposite. Hard to find what I'm looking for on there and navigating it can be confusing.

The HBO Max app on my TV makes all the Sex and the City actresses look really, really old.

Just FYI, they basically built the HBO Max app on top of the old HBO Go system. It's basically like a skin, according to one of the higher-ups at the company, and wasn't at all designed to support everything they've added to it. That said, they've been building a fresh HBO Max app from scratch that's apparently supposed to launch early in the new year, that will hopefully leave all of the current issues behind.

Here's the article addressing all this...

Isn't that article from this summer?!?!

Like really, how long does it take to build an app?

Says it'll take "four to five" months to fully deploy, which would put it at the end of January. And then I assume it's likely been met with hiccups and what not, which could push it back even more.

Doesn't change the fact this should have started long before 4-5 months ago, which I guess is why all the execs got fired.

Give me Flight Attendant s2 or something, and I can probably get over it real quick.

But being late to the game, and late to the fixes, ain't it in this landscape.

But yeah, overall, I agree. These issues are inexcusable, no matter the situation.

Like if we had to describe HBOMax at this point, it gives me HBO in a prettier skin. Some decent limited series labeled as originals that would have prob just ended up on HBO anyway. Trash like Flight Attendant. Some original movies- only bc they couldn't go to theatres and make buck. 4 hrs of Justice League, which it took me 3 days to get through. And a movie library that's too difficult to navigate.

That's the product.

Fortunately, ATT feels compelled to give me all of this for completely free, to boost their subscriber numbers, when I used to have to pay for just the HBO piece seasonality, as necessary- so why should I complain???

My HBO Max app doesn't currently recognize my subscription through my Dish. Cool. Cool.

I have to fully logout of the app once every few weeks in order for it to recognize my credentials. Sometimes it'll show that I'm logged in, but then when I try to play something it'll tell me I need to login, even though I already am. And when I try it doesn't recognize my credentials. So I'll then go to my account page and completely logout, close the app, restart it, and then choose "login with provider" or whatever it says for it to finally work. And this is on Apple TV, btw.

It's taken me almost a year to get 0% of the way through the Snyder Cut, it's probably going to take me 40 years to come to an end.

So I was able to figure it out on the plane. Had to turn airplane mode on and also turn wifi off.

The app isn't smart enough to know what to do without forcing it. Netflix is years ahead of HBO Max

My LG tv doesn't have an HBOMax app, so I have to go through my PS4 to get to it.

And that PS4 access is complete crap.

Almost every time I log into it, I have to sign out, sign in, get a code that I have to go onto my laptop and put in on their website, sign in with my cable provider and wait for my TV to refresh.

It is the biggest pain in the ass, and I want LG to get with it and make an app for it. It is the ONLY streaming service that they don't have an app for. As a result, I tend to watch HBOMax less than I would if I could get to it easier.

Maybe they are waiting for new app. I learned to just completely bypass native apps on TVs. The TV makers eventually just abandon their own software and the wifi adapters, if you have to rely on them, fail at a good rate. I have AppleTV on two main TVs and a Roku on another one just so I don't have to depend on TV software.

I wonder if some TV makers will start offering non-smart TV versions of their better models so you can save a buck. I would rather buy a high end TV that isn't "smart" and just use my AppleTV or a Roku who specialize in content delivery.

This. It's somewhat crazy to me how many people make a TV decision based on what apps they support. As you said, they'll stop supporting those apps at some point anyway. We have an older Sharp and can't even use the built in Netflix App anymore, let alone download "newer" apps like Disney or Apple TV.

They're never going to drop smart features from TVs. It is not a significant cost to them and it's a selling feature. They are however drifting towards implementing smart platforms that are developed and maintained by other companies, like integrating Roku, Fire TV, and Android TV platforms into TVs. They're worse than a standalone box, because the hardware dedicated to the smart features is worse, but the support will last longer.

Tinderbox, on HBOGO's launch: "Why would you launch in 2010? It took 5 years to do that? 5 years is ridiculous. It makes no sense."

11 years later, still the same stuff. The DNA of most companies can't be changed.

Assuming this is likely built on some sort of legacy system, i.e. structured to use the same data as the previous HBO apps used, easily months to try to rebuild all that. And then considering multiple platforms, OS's, testing, etc.,trying to rebuild from scratch is a huge lift, and that's also assuming massive resources dedicated to it and making it a priority.

HBO didn't learn about covid until it happened so still working out kinks. Disney knew years in advance.

It's 2021. They've been extraoradinarily slow, while chasing, but chasing extraordinarily slowly. It's so weird.

ARI EMANUEL:
We offered House of Cards to HBO first. They say, "Pilot? Netflix at that point was on the ropes. Credit Ted Sarandos, he puts thirteen episodes, plus
another thirteen episodes on the table. We go back to HBO, and they say, "We're going to give you just a pilot."
It was an easy decision. That was the beginning. That was the first time I realized, they're ****ed.

I had this issue. At least when I tried the key was no internte connection so full airplane mode (wifi off). With wifi connected to the plane it will not be able to connect ( even with a paid connection since streaming is blocked)

Ok? Not following the relevance, you asked how long an app could take and the answer is for a platform like this it's not nearly as quick as you might think. And that's not even accounting for internal politics and leadership.

I have no real opinion on the HBO platform as a whole, like most streamers they've made some great decisions and others that make you scratch your head.

Anyone know if this settings solution works?
